Car insurance renewal quote

Renewal date is 1st March so we found the quote in the letterbox when we got home this evening, we are still in shock!!

This year we paid £417.57, now the renewal quote is £801.99.  Insurance is with AXA through Halifax.

Nothing much has changed.......we are a year older, the car is now worth less.

OH has been getting quotes on those comparison websites this evening, the lowest she has found  so far is £704, with LV.  Better than over £800, but still a huge increase over the current premium.  We recently    took home insurance with them too.

What is going on?  I think someone else recently mentioned getting a renewal quote that was also massively more than their current premium.

Will ring them to try and haggle.    yell

Long gone are the days of 'Loyal customer' getting the best deal, we are now in the era of 'rip them off' and hope they don't notice it.

Sadly we now have to shop around every time.

We expect to shop around, though the increase in renewal premium is not usually so great, but this time we have not found anyone quoting a reasonable price at all, that is the surprising thing.

With this sort of huge increase it will be one of three reasons;

A) Last year you were a new customer and large discounts were given to entice you in. This year you lose that discount or..

B) Something has happened in the Postcode area used by your insurer that has produced an unacceptable increase in claims. The area could be quite large and not just in the immediate neighbourhood or..

C) Either your vehicle has suddenly become unprofitable due to claims to the insurer or your age+gender has become unprofitable.

Just looked back at my last 5 years insurance docs and they are all from different companies,  it does not pay to be loyal. I must be in a cheap postcode as my premium this year for insignia estate was £187 fully comp

Interesting! Just renewed the insurance on our towcar through SAGA  - about a tenner cheaper than last year.

Didn't I hear some time ago that the government were going to bring in measures to stop this sort of taking advantage of loyal customers? Not sure what the details were, or whether it was just another of those "nebulous"  gov statements! wink

Did you see the Martyn Lewis program about this a few weeks ago?

It pays to search for new car insurance about five weeks before the renewal date. This is because it's the cheapest time. Before and closer to the renewal date the prices go back up again.

C'mon now M. You know that they haven't got time to sort out day to day things that matter to the likes of you and me. This will be one of those things that either won't see the time of day or will be watered down.
