Car insurance renewal quote

Renewal date is 1st March so we found the quote in the letterbox when we got home this evening, we are still in shock!!

This year we paid £417.57, now the renewal quote is £801.99.  Insurance is with AXA through Halifax.

Nothing much has changed.......we are a year older, the car is now worth less.

OH has been getting quotes on those comparison websites this evening, the lowest she has found  so far is £704, with LV.  Better than over £800, but still a huge increase over the current premium.  We recently    took home insurance with them too.

What is going on?  I think someone else recently mentioned getting a renewal quote that was also massively more than their current premium.

Will ring them to try and haggle.    yell

We’ve been lucky this year we are £60 cheaper than last and £120 lower than renewal quote. Lots of shopping around finally got us that price with Aviva (most comparison sites don’t cover Aviva or direct line so worth checking them separately)

it pays to shop around.

Ah well, just an idea. Quite a few similar sales groups have financial services.

You never know why or how these companies charge what they do. They follow their 'guidelines' and then change the following year.

I was told by one company that it was cheaper to insure for more miles per year - the average 10 - 15,000 per year even if you didn't drive that mileage as by going for a much lower milage says to them you have less experience and thus more likely to have an accident. You then speak to others and they say the less miles on the road the cheaper you pay as you're less likely to have a bump.

Smoke and mirrors.......shop around, cross your fingers and hope for the best!!

Well, OH has had the "conversation" with our current insurer, they are not budging, but of course they (Halifax) are only brokers.

She asked them for a quote for 8000 miles instead of our present 10000, just to see if going a lower was a bad idea, but the quote was £35  less, so 8000 does not seem a factor.

The very nice lady she spoke with also professed to be shocked by the increase, but could offer no explanation.

Not only has the premium gone up almost 100%, the excess has gone from £100 to £350.

They, AXA, obviously do not want our business!

Policy will not be auto renewed now, so that is sorted.
