£1 coin use by date

I know they are still legal tender but read an article that shops were not holding back the old ones and banking them to reduce the amount in circulation. I was given old ones as change in a large chain store and mentioned it. Cashier attitude - still OK to use until October. Yes they had attitude 😉.

Out of interest have you had any guidance about them as a retailer?

We can take them up till midnight on the 15th October, on the 16th they are not legal tender ,but we can still bank them

I read the article to imply that old one pound coins could be accepted but where possible change should be the new coins. That way the amount in circulation was reduced gradually. 

I banked an old fiver a couple of weeks ago. My mum found it, she was cross she'd missed it 😂.

Just  got  my  heavier  weight  cords  out  for  the  winter  and  found  one  lone  'Round Pound'  hiding  in  there    so  that  was  used  for  the  carpark  by  the  dentists  --  less  agony  all  round  today 

I've got a money jar, the sort with a counter that counts the coins as they go in. I'd built up quite a collection of copper coins and five pence pieces plus a few pound coins thrown in. So I had to abandon filling it to the top and took it to the bank last week due to the pound coins finishing. The machine count didn't match the jar count, surprising how many five pence pieces aren't UK ones but look very similar. Must check my change more carefully. 

Just found an old pound coin on my desk today, thought we had used them all  up.

Sure we can find something to spend it on before the 15th.

People with any old £1 coins should check them to see if any of them have the UK region capitals on they are worth a bit more than face values as they had a limited manufacturing run. Someone on TV the other day suggested they could be worth several times face value.

We keep getting them in change, which is very annoying, given that we are so close to the date they are no longer legal tender.  We got one in Aldi today. You don't get much chance to check your change at their checkouts!!!  We'll get rid of it tomorrow, and then probably use cards for everything, for the next week so we don't get any more!!!

I'm sure parking meters will still happily accept them for a considerable time to come.

I keep getting them slipped in change and respend asap if possible.

I'm sure several weeks ago I read or heard BBC Money Box, that they were taking longer to remove from circulation than expected as retailers weren't banking them as takings but continuing to circulate as change. The 'banks' had expected the old coins to be banked once they'd taken them in payment rather than banking the new ones. Maybe they should have been more proactive in their endeavours 😉. 

This week I will not be accepting them as change without a challenge 😲
