Just after i started school,we moved from temp accomadation (our house in London was destroyed by a doodle bug)to a house that was 6,miles away and my dad for a month used to take me on the back of his bicycle to and from school,as he was on leave, until I went to a local school

I think it was 1955 when I first started going to school.
Yeh,......... did you use chalk and slate Malc ?
Write your comments here...I do remember chalk and slate to begin with but it was soon phased out.
Wonder if anyone else used slate and a chalk at school ,around 1955 ? Ummmmm

I started school in the early fifties, we did indeed have chalk and little blackboards but we also had pencils, wax crayons and plain exercise books. Loose white plain newspaper came in huge piles that had to be cut with a guillotine also coloured sugar paper used for painting (with powder paints.) We had plasticene "balls" to play with, all one colour after frequent use. No frills education in an old church hall with two classes squeezed in, so many of us born after the war, no room at the "proper" school til we were seven.
