We need more basic facility sites

With the mention of the closure of High Onn and given that the club seem fully intent on pressing forward with the expansion to full facility sites by upgrading with serviced pitches, and different forms of self catering in glamping, yurts, pods and even airstream caravans etc it seems that those members who are on a more limited budget or even those who just prefer basics, are getting left behind. You might say we can use the cl system and that’s exactly what is happening. This is showing there is a demand by the number of fully booked cl’s. So why can’t the club come down to the more basic forms of caravanning and find and expand this type of site within the network. There are big gaps in the geographical area of the UK that could be opened up by developing this type of site. No doubt there would be an initial outlay but nowhere near the scale of that of a large scale flagship type site. The basic sites in the network now are priced at £17 (£18 from next year) and this comes in on a par with basic cl’s. There are thousands of members who would jump at the chance of this type of site being run under the club banner. The following counties are lacking in club sites, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, amongst others, would benefit from this type of site

This is how caravan sites started off please don’t allow them to die.

Again we now have a new term, low facility site is this what harry means by basic facility site?

Low or basic does it matter, I am sure most can interpret what is meant.

It does as if people are going to ask the club for something then it has to be clear. a basic site to me is no EHU, no facilities. Not what the OP is after?

As far as we are concerned here the Club's model is grass or hardstanding with EHU.

The provision of non-EHU pitches is even less! If you're lucky you might find 6 or so pitches and only about a fiver less than standard!

But that is still cheaper , all other facilities are for use

Early on in this thread Black Knowl was used as an example of a SP at £48.10. So is it possible to get the New Forest Black Knowl experience at a Basic pitch cost and the answer is Yes, Camping in the Forest run the Aldridge Hill site, which is on the same approach road as Black Knowl. This site doesn't have a toilet block or a shower block, there are no set pitches and you even get to share your stay with the New Forest horses, ponies and cows as they are free to roam the site. So how much per night does this basic site cost in High Season, which the BK cost was and its £27, for 2 adults and 2 children. Not the low cost which some people are saying basic pitches should.

My conclusion from this that the pitch price does reflect the facilities being offered but location, location, location also has a big impact.

Let's just accept that there are many ways to enjoy our hobby of touring and that the only right way to tour is the way that's right for you.

I have just had a look at the C&CC forum and I cannot find a singel thread discussing low facility sites. I don't think they have any at all but my guess is that because they offer a far wider choice of pitch types on their sites members feel there is no need?

They do have a few sites which have no facilities block.

Ah! So I did. It is however an exception. Isn't it owned by the council and managed by the Club?

The club leases the site, as I understand it, just as they lease many others such as racecourse sites.

I am sure racecourse sites are run by this club for the racecourse as most of the facilities are not for exclusive club use as is Warwick, Cheltenham ,Thirsk

There’s a CL In the New Forest offering a whole week for £70. Cheap sites abound.

we may soon be paying more for an awning pitch or a HS AND upcoming electric surcharges..

You're making it sounds as it has to be paid for like energy increases, there is no we for a start and one only has to pay if you go to a club site, as often said by yourself and many others there are many cheaper campsites out there.

If you don't want to pay club prices for a HS and any electric increase use somewhere that won't charge as much?

I thought it might be paying less for grass btw?

Posted on 01/09/2022 12:20

TDA mused that, when pitch type changes come in, it may well be that awning pitches are more expensive (£1?) and HS prices might also increase (£1?), rather than grass decrease.

I just picked up on that and mused a tad further. She/I (we) were talking about club sites and the upcoming changes...what else could 'we might soon' possibly mean in that context?

of course, folk can do as you remind us several times a day, go elsewhere. Some, including myself, do just that, but others are loyal to the Club and probably want their vanning to be linked to it if possible.

add the above potential increases to the current leccy add ons (up to £2.50 so far?) and an awning HS pitch might soon be £4.50 more than in the recent past.

These rises won't concern me, as I won't be using Club sites, I'll be using sites to suit my requirements, price 'limits', locations and weather pattern...

however, as a CT and CAMC member, none of the above precludes me having an interest in what 'my Club' is doing and what changes they are making going forward...these two things aren't mutually exclusive.

so, irrespective of what sites I use, and where, I'll continue to post my views on CT.....of course, if that's alright with you?
