Steamer Quay refurb removal of non EHU pitches

Just had my copy of the December magazine and noticed that the economy pitches are to be removed at Steamer Quay as part of the refurbishment.  As I understand it, these are the non-EHU pitches.  Isnt this somewhat short sighted in the current climate?  Surely more will be using off grid as a way of saving money?  We certainly will be next year.  Maybe there is some special issue at this site?  I havnt stayed there, just noticed it in the magazine.

Have you asked them why they seem to be choosing the SP route?

Because at heart they are still the Caravan Club. smile

I don’t think that’s particularly helpful to those like DD who clearly don’t want SP provision to increase. We read reports of numerous MHs using SPs which immediately throws doubt on your quip, even if it was meant to be light hearted.

I don't think there will be the same driving force to book SPs now that you can book hardstandings. I have never really understood the need for motorhomes to use SPs anyway, thery are much more self contained than caravans.

We have certainly booked a serviced pitch in the past to make sure we get a hardstanding. The trouble is that we have become rather fond of having a serviced pitch, especially if staying for more that a few days. We always use our own facilities so probably have more call for fresh water and waste water than those that use the site facilities so its a bit of a luxury to have it all on tap, so to speak. As far as Steamer Quay is concerned, we are unlikely to be regular visitors. However it is a place where you could stay for a week with lots of things to do, as has helpfully been pointed out in some of the posts. So an extra £35 for the week on top of standard pitch prices to me is not going to break the bank!

Again in the sites I use it's all HS yet SP are often more popular than standard HS pitches so that driving force doesn't exist.

As to why MHs use SP I guess it's what they want?

I personally don't use SPs unless there is good reason. It is a facility I do not need but I can fully understand why some do and why they are popular with some, but I would not like to see all pitches serviced. The Club should maintain and expand choice the latter by adding further options e.g. with or without EHU.

Its not going to break the bank to me either but it is a meal in the pub or a couple more nights away on a CL

Maybe so but none of that means they are still the Caravan Club at heart which is what you posted before. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good Afternoon

Just out of interest, I've just spent a week at Seacroft club site. Having a brew with the staff the chat got around to the motorhome / caravan balance and pitch use. Over the Christmas week (this one) 80% of the serviced pitches are booked by motorhomers.

Regarding Steamer Quay, someone has mentioned the refurb spoiling the character of the place. Yes it has charm but it also has a very high water table. The bottom of the site quickly becomes unusable in bad weather. Part of the agreement from the council is that the site is open all year so that obviously means hardstanding pitches and electric hookup. Don't quote me but in my opinion metering would make sense as everything will be new?wink

I personally don't need electric or water on a pitch but that won't stop me visiting there. For me it's always location first. I've stayed at Steamer before when the van lifer travellers were staying at Longmarsh car park. Mmmmmm, no thanks.
