Site will not receive mail for members

Hi we are currently on Southlands caravan and motorhome site on the I of W. We have been to this site on a number of times over the years and never had any issues, as you obviously need to pay for a ferry if you are on the mainland we fully use this additional cost by staying 21 days.

I have stayed this length of time on sites before and due mainly to the good to poor to non existent  wifi on sites it is important that members can receive Mail as and when needed. I have also had small Amazon parcels ie a new Whale pump delivered to a club site and the warden even delivered it to our pitch, very nice man.

Now my wife is 70 whilst we are here and I had a card sent, one of these internet ones, it arrived via Royal Mail and the wardens refused to receive it I was notified on line it had been sent back to sender.

wondered what others members think am I expecting too much for a message on the message board like other sites, ie post for Mr ——-

I have emailed the club for comment but as always no reply, why don’t they reply?

I can only assume it is covid related, to minimise contact. However, I can’t see anything online and the risks would be very small. We have certainly had birthday cards and other items sent to sites in the past, particularly when we had a seasonal. What did the warden give as the reason for not accepting the card?

I also wondered whether it was a COVID thing. The risk of catching the virus from a surface has more or less been disproved, or at least lacking any evidence to support it,  according to Professor Tim Spector of King's College, London, in one of his podcasts. Perhaps it's more to do with discouraging people entering Reception where arguably the risk of transmission is greater. On Continental sites I have often seen post pinned to a notice board so no need to enter reception. I do also wonder, in these days of electronic communication, whether site receptions actually get much mail?

In the past we have had things sent to Club sites but we have always discussed that with the wardens prior to making the arrangements. With things sent by a courier you can generally follow the delivery process via your phone but Royal Mail is much more difficult.

I suppose you will have to ask site staff what the rules are now. I imagine site staff have some flexibility in what they allow or not. Receptions seem to be closed most of the time these days so you might have to collar a member of staff when they are emptying the bins!!!

I seem to recall from a previous thread that wardens were not accepting parcels unless it was cleared with them? I can't remember if this was extended to letters?

As above check with the site staff.

Did you clear it with the site staff in advance, Cman? I would never assume without asking first.

Edit: Crossed with yours, Corners. Got your tin hat ready?🤣

A further thought might be is that they end up with a lot of uncollected mail which they then have to decide what to do with. If letters don't have a return address on the outside would they be overstepping the mark to open a letter in order to redirect. If that is the reason I can well understand why they have stopped receiving personal mail. But you have to get an explanation from the site staff, all the rest of us can do is second guess the possibilities. Let us know what the answer is.

They said they get left with uncollected mail, so stopped doing it, another member is on here having sold his house and is living in his van house hunting on the island, he is in same position will not take mail for anyone except themselves. I admit I didn’t clear it as I have had post delivered previously, when I called in on the day it was to be delivered the warden said he didn’t know wether it had been delivered or not but we don’t receive members post full stop.

I am very disappointed it has cost me £15 and what was meant as a small surprise for my lovely wife’s 70 th it has left a bitter taste. Cannot see problem with taking in post for goodness sake

I can remember seeing message boards on sites to collect mail and even special messages chalked up. We've asked if a site would receive a birthday card in the past but have always checked first. Maybe things have changed, sorry to hear about your card.

I think if you have  a tracked parcel delivered to a site you are almost certainly going to be there to pick it up. Of all things I once had a new toilet cassette delivered to Old Hartley when we were here. I could see when the courier was due to arrive and I made sure I was at the entrance to collect it.

However I can perfectly see the reasoning of the wardens in not accepting unsolicited mail when they have to take responsibility for it's safe keeping and disposal should it not be collected. In the case of the house hunter he should have made alternative arrangements with the Main Post Office on the IOW to collect his mail from there.
