Guided Tours

Don't you mean "suckers"?  Doubt if the coach would be suitable for those with mobility and other medical issues which is why we prefer to use our vehicle. 

We would be interested in a guided tour of the historic city of York and the York Minster cathedral and a trip on the North York Moors Railway.  Once you have seen one or two castles, generally you have seen them all!  As for the spectacular Kynren show, an Epic Tale of England it is of no interest to us.

Sorry, but it is way out of our budget besides we bought our caravan for relaxing in when away on holiday and not to be rushing out every day.  If we wanted to do all those things we would like to do it over 2 - 3 weeks and probably on different occasions.

Well, full marks to CAMC for trying something different and I hope the diversification works out. The positive attempt is worth encouragement.

Some people spends tens of thousands of pounds on their fortnights holiday so a few hundred for a few days away might be a bargain to them .... whether those people are members of the caravan club is debateable 🤷‍♂️

I always think that people who take up vanning usually have a sense of adventure and independence. Judging by the exodus from sites each day as people go off exploring it is a popular activity enjoyed by most.

Of course the club can offer alternatives as they already do overseas but it's a very expensive alternative.

Well I have a difficult to park motorhome and I still would not go on a guided tour in the UK. As relative newbie when I had a caravan I did do one of the Clubs tours to the tulip fields in the Nerthlands, very enjoyable it was too, but in the UK!. Half the pleasure of doing it yourself is in the planning of where to go, where to stay and what to visit. I would not entertain guided tours in the UK it at any price.

There are often post about the club being stuck in the past, nothing new ever been offered... yet when the club does try something new there is a reaction there too.

As to prices, guided tours are usually more expensive than package holidays, and package holidays are usually more expensive than putting together one's own travels.

The cost is there and as always with me, it's not compulsory, it's not for me - yet but I can see the attraction, but leave it to individuals to buy or not.

I suspect it will get a quite a few bookings. 

All to their own but I’m an independent spirit so I hate organisation. I don’t think I miss out on anything that guided tours may offer after all there are so many research tools to help one out.

You raise a very valid point actually around ability to make the most of a coach/tour organised trip. I did one with my sister a few years ago, and we were by far the youngest and fittest on there. We were doing two NT properties, plus Canterbury Cathedral each day, but quite a few couldn’t manage to get round two properties. We assisted one or two who had done a bit too much.

I know York very very well, it was my Dad’s home town, and it is awash with tours of all kinds. One of the best is an open top bus. The Minster has its own guides, as do many other places, so it’s easy and cheap if you want to join in a tour anywhere. Jorvik Centre is small gondolas that take you around all the excavations and exhibitions, with its own guides in the Museum and living crafts area. North York Moors railway is best done from Pickering, a day rider ticket that allows you to get on and off at every station along the route, as each place has its own attractions, such as Goathland, Levisham, and Grosmont, which is where the engine sheds, Museum, etc is. If fit enough, there’s a fabulous walk between Goathland and Grosmont.

If it was my first time to York, must do’s would be Railway Museum, Minster, Jorvik, walk the walls if you are ok with steps and heights,  Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and St Mary’s Abbey Gardens. A lot of folks like Betty’s, but it’s usually chock full of Japanese and American tourists, and we have never found the food worth the long queues. Our choice is to buy lunch and then do a river trip down to Bishopthorpe Palace and back, with usually great commentary on the cruise boats. You can very easily fill a full week in York, doing something different each day.

At the end of the day success will be measured by how popular these tours are. If they don't create the interest I imagine the club won't continue with them. On the other hand if we see more tours added it would perhaps suggests that they have been a success. Some years ago we both enjoyed a variety of coach tours and they were good fun but busy with the dreaded phrase the night before that it will be an early breakfast the following day! We can't judge the success or otherwise by our own leanings it will be bums on seats that will be the final arbitrator?
