Exploiting the members

Why is it necessary for the club sites to seek excessive profits on  school holidays. My son has booked a pitch at Brecon beacon site for the Easter holidays. Cost per night for 2 adults and 1 child  £37.80 per night. The following week it would have been £ 27.95. What extra costs does the running of the site between the 2 weeks. .Nothing just exploiting the members because of the school holidays. Yet another excuse to make more money from the members when we already pay a membership fee.

You are never going to stop holiday companies increasing their prices during school holidays , has been and always will be the case . The only way I can see that being eased would be for the government to make it mandatory for all LEA's to have school holidays at the same time. At least that way the holiday band width would be reduced , so reducing length of peak times . Can't see that happening though.

Agree with all that, it has always been thus with prices, and agree that standard school holidays would be welcome by parents and teachers but it's a little more complicated than one would think. Schools are under the control of LEAs but Academies are not and are very much independent (they don't have to follow the national curriculum for example), past and present governments wanted school to be independent of LEAs and pushed hard with large money incentives for schools to be become academies. A lot of new legislation would be needed and as you say it won't be happening anytime soon.

I joined the C&CC 3 years ago in order to use their foreign touring insurance thats not only  cheaper but more generous. I never got to use their sites as Covid  came but have in the past as a non member and found them indistinguishable  CC offerings.  However when they shut down foreign touring and made the staff redundant with indecent haste at the start of the pandemic I left.

I have to say that  regarding choice of sites I find this discussion  really quite surprising  , I go to to a campsite because its somewhere I want to be. Does   "parking my car on grass" or width of the gravel patch. dictate holiday destinations for some?

Posted on 23/01/2022 11:16

We also pick a site because it’s where we want to be. The only reason we joined the C&CC was because we bought a MH and needed more choice, due to not having a car and stoping on 18 sites in 6 weeks, instead of 5 / 6. However, from 2023, if both providers have sites in the same general area, the choice is clear. A big benefit now is, as we only generally stop 2 / 3 days, rather than a week, it’s not such a big deal if we don’t like it.

John when you are young there is no tomorrow and pensions are not at all interesting but when one sees retirement or our case redundancy looming they become a whole lot  more so. Thank goodness for the EU communities fund that topped up mine to a full pension at 50.

Maybe we were lucky with our employment? and the jobs for life? If so wanted ,,I  was also retired? at 50, when privatisation was on the horizon

Where as today a job for life is but a thing of the past for the majority

It seems not many these days seem to want a job that means getting dirty as we did

JV, you demonise everyone younger than you. The Govt(all) in this Country are already pushing workplace pensions onto everyone, rightly so. There is no opt out. It won’t hurt you in the present nor future, we are lucky we got away with what we did the generations now are not being fed honey.

Those things certainly seem to bother some members David.  I had the "pleasure" of one member telling me that he and his wife didn't like the colour and size of the gravel on the Exmoor House site.  Apparently some pitches were too grey, some had gravel that was too large and on others it was too small.  I finished the washing up in record time 😂.

PS Some pitchess were also too weedy! 🤣  Shocking.

It is not unusual for OH or Myself when "sitting out "on site to pull up weeds on the pitch,

Bit difficult to when on grass through

We are in the fortunate position that although we are pensioners we can afford CAMC site prices. Not that we want to or do in high season.

We are members of C&CC and like others on here find their sites perfectly acceptable. Yes some of their sites facilities could do with an upgrade but I've never found the anything but clean. We usually get offered more than 1 choice of pitch. Their high peak rates don't don't extend for weeks beyond the holiday.

Now that this club has given up their USP I can only find one reason to stay a member and that is CLs.

The overseas service ie booking sites we don't use, why would we. The ferry booking while we have used in the past there are other ways of booking and can be cheaper. I can't think of any offers we have used that would save us the cost of the membership, maybe we are generally good at getting VFM.

IMO this new deposit booking system will not be popular among some of the members, especially when they fall foul of the new 21 day rule. We can only hope that it will curb the book a year in advance speculative bookings we see a lot of. I know the current rules encourage that but it would appear that is the main reason why so many folk wanted a deposit system in place. Only time will tell.

Now that overseas travel is possible once again the UK sites might find a bit of breathing space and those elusive sought after pitches will become available.

It will matter not to us, as we are off overseas to enjoy the delights of less crowded sites, more choice of sites and sites with more facilities for less money.

Before I get jumped on, yes I know we pay extra to go abroad but it is so worth it.

Whatever and wherever you go enjoy the time you have while you have it. If these last 2 years have taught us nothing else its that you don't know what's going to happen next.

JVB

I am not quite sure where you get your world view from? I have two sons in their forties and both understand the importance of a future pensions and are making contributions accordingly. I was fortunate that I had a noncontributory pension from my employees. However my 30/40/50's were not halcyon days of plenty and I don't think it was until I retired that I didn't have some sort of balance on a credit card, not unmanageable, but none the less not fully paid off. I have been retired 15 years now and have felt reasonable comfortable but I am concerned about rising prices and I can certainly see that this year my income could be going backwards and unlikely to be recovered?

I can't blame the Club for rising prices as they will have to address their own expenses which we have been told rise annually ahead of inflation. If I am in the situation where campsite prices become too expensive the sensible thing for me to do would be to consider whether this hobby is still worthwhile. Complaining that campsite prices are getting to expensive is slightly missing the point, they are as they are and if can't afford them its time to stop and consider other forms of holidays.

David

Sorry but it seems that you are on your other planet again? Work place pensions should have been mandatory for everyone ,,when I started work  it has meant that we do not now need to rely on , as some the government out of our taxes to get topped up
