We’re delighted to announce the Club has purchased Dornafield Touring Park.

The site, to be called Dornafield Club Campsite is situated in a quiet valley, surrounded by beautiful countryside and perfectly placed for exploring Torquay, Totnes, Newton Abbot and Dartmoor.

On-site there are over 100 all-weather fully serviced pitches, excellent facilities and lots of entertainment for all to enjoy - including table tennis, pool, darts, two adventure playgrounds, a dog walk and an all-weather tennis court!

Ooh! I thought you disliked sarcasm, David! surprised

Did I say we had never made a mistake? That might be your perception (wink) of my post but I think I said there had been places we " wouldn't return to".

The fact is that we've always planned our holidays around walking, climbing and, in my younger days, running. So we've never stayed in a location we hated (obviously should have made that clearer) though some of the sites and, very occasionally,  cottages we've used have been not to our liking.

(As an aside, Dornafield would probably have been one of them - we went to look when we were staying at the excellent Ross Park a few years back and decided it wasn't for us. smile)

Why should pubs offer anything at all to MH-ers? Many either don't charge or just ask for a minimal sum. Enforce rules about facilities and they'll likely stop overnight parking on their land.

Pub owners are only interested in takings behind the bar which MH-ers hopefully contribute towards, so the present system benefits both landlords and campers. As soon as the pubs are expected to dig deep to provide facilities, their gain goes out of the window and with it goes the benefit to MH-ers.

Don't forget you can usually use pub facilities during opening hours.

Perhaps they should start charging a reasonable sum (£10) and provide basic facilities. We would then be interested in using them and also buying our dinner in the pub. I am sure we are not alone. The charged for Aires with dump facilities, we use in France, are well used by many nationalities including the British, although there will almost always be a free non facility one nearby.

I can only repeat what I said before, Steve. In my view, the enforced provision of facilities will probably result in cessation of the scheme.

Comparing French aires with UK pubs is surely off the wall?

Anyway, that’s not going to affect anything at Dornafield where you will have all the facilities you want and can eat at any nearby pub of your choice. The Three Mile Oak is very good👍🏻

Not really, we stopped in a vineyard car park (with facilities) that was free. We of course covered the cost by buying a few bottles of wine.

As to walking to that pub from Dornafield. No thanks, not along that entrance road, particularly in the dusk or dark.

Do you really think foreign visitors and Brits will flock to use pub car parks that charge for a patch of tarmac and expect visitors to pay for basic facilities and eat in the pub?😄

I think Dornafield is not for you, Steve, so may I recommend Stover site? Non-facility but on a wide major road with a bus stop outside. No nearby pub but several cafes in Trago which you can either walk to or use their extensive car parks. You can also enter the country park almost directly from the site.

Why shouldn’t the pubs spend the money, they want to benefit from the motor-homers eating and drinking in their establishment. Why should other organisations have to inconvenience their customers to bail the pubs out.

You are staying in the pub car park for free, you are not paying for that service so why should a pub then give you free water (which it will pay for) and free drainage.

What do you refer to as an official site? Wild camping is one thing, but stopping in a pub car park, which is authorised, or in an aire, equally authorised is another. It is not about willingness to pay, it is about convenience and location. If we stay overnight in a pub car park and have a meal in the pub, that is likely to cost us more than stopping at a CL and cooking for ourselves. It’s about choice.

I would expect any official site that LVs are allowed to stop overnight at would have the basic facilties as all sites being used as a cheap or free? Stop should have. a refuse bin, water fill and waste empty including black waste

Walking to and from Trago from Stover is taking your life into your own hands.  The mile long road is fairly straight and just wide enough to encourage speeding.  It is also very busy and only about half has a foot path.  Of course when you leave Stover site you have to cross the A382 race track near the roundabout, if you dare.

The 0.1 mile access stretch of road from Dornafield to the junction is narrow and encourages traffic to crawl along.  From the junction the 0.4 miles stretch is only a little wider but equally encourages care.  Much safer all round.

I've done both several times and know which I prefer.

If the lane to and from Dornafield is that narrow it could well be like the lanes in this area NON locals take it easy and careful winksurprised
