Cost of sites has gone mad

For about 13/14 years we have stayed at North Yorkshire Moors Site.  Its one of our favourite sites on the network and perfect for our family.

Ive just been looking for the end of May as its half term for our kids and was almost floored when i saw the price.

This is a site which is lovely but has no toilet block. 2 Adults, 3 Children £36.70 per night!!!! When we first stayed there it was £18 i believe.

I then checked scarborough west ayton which we also like and stayed there last year - £60.20 per night

We thought the price we paid at easter at Gwern y Bwlch was bad enough but this is now a complete joke.

We have stayed in a lovely small site only 500 yards up the road, with the best views in whitby and a toilet and its only £18-20 per night.

Do the caravan club actually want anyone to keep with them.  We've been members for 15 years and i am pretty close to leaving now as its just unsustainable.

Do they want families or are they actually just want older couples with dogs to visit their sites and create an exclusive adult only and dog club?

Im aware the cost of electric etc is rising but not surely by that much!!

Anyone else think the same or am i just going mad

"In the end I gave up the will to live and just stumped up the swingeing prices for an easier life."

Your choice was to pay for the convenience. That’s a fair trade I think.

Easily said, isn't it?  But when you've spent the hours I did planning a tour, navigating the maps and websites and trying to dovetail everything together across multiple companies, blissfully assuming the relative costs are going to be much as they used to be, you may think differently.

In the end I gave up the will to live and just stumped up the swingeing prices for an easier life.  I'll be honest, the booking became so frustrating that I was bordering on cancelling the whole idea and just flying off to the sun for a fortnight instead.

For several years, I have always favoured CAMC sites, with CCC playing second fiddle, mainly because the planning and booking process with CAMC was easier and more flexible.

I followed the same mindset for this week's planning exercise, but I'm afraid the exorbitant pricing revelation has taught me that those CAMC and CCC roles will now have to reverse for me.  With these prices, in the future I'll be planning primarily for CCC sites, with CAMC filling in the gaps.

Well when I'm planning any type of holiday then I do note the cost. And when you were booking the club site in question the price would have been clearly displayed so sorry I do not follow your reasoning. If it appeared a rip off then club sites why did you press book and then pay a deposit? Club sites are not the only ones on offer and there will always be alternatives nearly, it doesn't have to be a club site.

Also, unless you are departing within the next 21 days why not cancel at no cost the club site and find another site more to you liking regarding cost? It might even prove cheaper to find a cheaper site and forgo the club's deposit.

As to your future plans find what gives you the best value for money of course.

I paid that price 5yrs ago for the peace & tranquility with stunning views that you have there. I counter your post by saying it’s worth every penny. Monetary costs are not everything.

We paid it last Tuesday😁

The fact that CL owners, be they farmers, business owners or just someone with a big garden are willing to put aside space, time and expenditure to provide pitches, welcome all and sundry onto their properties, and keep going despite things like rising costs, livestock health outbreaks, trespassers occasionally is to be praised. Lots of them are in wonderful locations as well. Responsible tourers use them.

We’ve just stayed for 7 nights on a serviced pitch on a site in Northumberland….prices have gone up but site set in a beautiful peaceful location….immaculate facilities block….we are both under 60 with no dogs. Took time to visit 2 other sites nearby…that are part of the other club…cheaper but no comparison on the quality and size of the pitches. For as long as we can, we will continue to use club sites but would certainly use CLs if in a location we were looking at and have suitable facilities.

Wishing everyone a great 2023 touring……enjoy 😉

Oh look, there’s a tree.

I think £18 to park overnight in a field is the biggest rip off of all. Good luck to farmers who have the land, but I’ve got better things to do than go to sites like that.

Posted on 23/04/2023 21:37

I'd much rather look at a tree, and the view beyond, on a piece of land away from hoards of folk, than be on a C&MH club site looking at row upon row of other caravans and Motorhomes & multitudes of other LV owners, and with no other view! But everyone to their own!

So far this year we have been away for 64 nights on 11 CLs,  2 C&CC and 3 Commercial sites, mostly H/S and all with EHU,  at an average of £17.51 per night. Hopefully we will be able to continue in a similar vein throughout the year, and I doubt very much that we will use any CC sites.

Sorry you didn't follow my reasoning.  I first studied the maps and worked out a travel plan, stitching together sites and dates for the two clubs.  It was reasonable to assume prices would be just slightly up on what they'd previously been when we'd used these sites in recent times, so I was not yet considering costs at this point in the planning process.

I then went on the two websites to actually start booking the various nights.  It was only at this point that the charges became clear.  Adding the second adult and clicking the specific dates revealed the astonishing increase in cost for the CAMC sites.  It's not at all clear before reaching that point.

By now, I'd spent so long familiarising myself with the new website, and planning the itinerary, that I felt committed to continue and didn't have the energy to back out and start all over again looking for better VFM.

You could say this decision was for my own convenience, as another correspondent has pointed out.  I accept that.  Except, it taught me a lesson.  CAMC fees have increased significantly, while CCC don't appear to have gone the same money-grabbing way.

One site we're visiting is the popular Baltic Wharf.  We've stayed there many times, and there has always been a premium for that site, which we accept.  We've been used to paying £27 to £34 per night at this site for the past few years.

Specifically, we've paid these nightly rates on this site...

Oct-18  £27.60
Mar-19  £27.00
Apr-19   £27.00
Oct-19   £29.60
Apr-21   £34.20
Sep-21  £34.20

and now

May-23  £52.52

This year I discovered our 5 nights there are suddenly ranging from £45 to £56 per night, with an average of £52.  Ok, it's a bank holiday, but meanwhile, the CCC club site we book equally regularly has somehow managed to remain a reasonable £31 per night for the exact same 5 nights in May.

£31 versus £52.  That is a really significant difference, so I'm afraid I have to agree with the original poster on this thread.

I am wondering WHY CMHC  prices have gone up so much, when many others may have gone up. but nowhere near as much?

However, unless they’ve opened one without me noticing, the CCC site isn’t on the harbour side in the centre of Bristol.
Price comparisons only have any validity if you compare like with like. Plus I think your last price for September 21 will be artificially lowered by the Vat reduction. For us when we visit, as we want to be in the centre of Bristol it is good value for money.

Just one additional point, as you have a MH and haven’t been since Sept 21. The site is within the new Bristol LEZ. If you haven’t done so, it’s worth checking if there is any charge for your MH.

So far this year we have been away 42 nights and the average we have paid is £23.38.

P.S. So far we have not used a single C&MC site.
