Cofton Holidays near Starcross

We’ve been to both, around 15-20 years ago. Cofton was certainly a more commercial site, catering more for families I would say. That said, it will be a lot quieter with the kids back at school. The 3-4 small lakes are quite pleasant and perfect for anglers. Out of the two, I think I preferred Lady’s Mile, but it would only be marginal. I liked the fact that one can take a pleasant walk into Dawlish directly from the top of the site, and the site had a more laid back ‘feel’ to it, I thought.

Of course, it could be totally different now.

The touring area looks very similar to a  CAMC site so if it's cheaper, why not try it?

Been there several times David. Decent enough commercial site but always out of season. It's a huge site and there are many statics and lots of grass terraced tent and caravan/MH pitches.

good walking into Dawlish, nice cycling further afield up and down the Exe Estuary cycle route....even to Exeter if you like.

the Ship and the Anchor are two nice pubs (inside and outside if you get the weather) at Cockwood, 15 mins gentle stroll.

we actually prefer the Exmouth side of the estuary, the THS meets at Exmouth RFC are very popular.

I haven't checked David but I thought only the "super" pitches were metered? Rally groups sometimes use the site, better value too. Nice area but like YT we have used the THS sites at Exmouth, run by various groups and in such a good spot by the estuary etc. The ferry goes across to Dawlish Warren or Starcross so it's the best of both worlds. Probably not for all but an alternative. Some of the sites around Dawlish are a bit big and boisterous but pleasant enough out of season.

Thanks everyone for their contributions. I am hoping that by the second week in September it will be a bit quieter than during the school holidays. Sites like Lady's Mile and Cofton are not dissimilar to sites we have stayed on in the South of France. Cofton could suit us as there is a regular bus service on the main road just down from the site with Exeter in one direction and Dawlish in the other so lots of trip possibilities. 

Brue, I am not sure about which pitches are metered but certainly the ones I looked at were. They seemed to have introduced a super pitch with delineated pitches with water, waste and TV hook-up. I don't mind the idea and it would be interesting to see how they do it which I understand is via a website, seems a bit like how the Club are doing it?

Just a little bit of an update on the metering I received an email from Cofton today informing me how to arrange the electricity metering for our stay as the payment is contracted out in a similar way to how the CMC are doing it at Wyatts Covert. Although I have not added any money to the system yet, we are still a few weeks away, I decided to set up an account. Interesting, amongst my choice of campsites there was the CMC logo so I assume its the same company running metering for the Club?

My dilemma now is how much credit to add? I am thinking of £15 which would give me about 7 Kwh a day. Whilst we would heat hot water I doubt we will need the heating and the only other big users is likely to be the fridge which is only an under the counter size plus the occasional use of the kettle. OK I have the option of adding more money at any point during my stay.  It will be an interesting experiment, especially as this could be standard practise on a Club site near you soon!

David, ACSI sites have a 4kwh per day allowance and most folk I know who use this system find this about right.

our large fridge freezer might use most of this in a hot day, but a smaller version would be essential, say 2.5 to 3kwh.

a one kw kettle boiling for 5 mins is a 12th of a kWh, use it 4 times for 1/3 kWh.

Heating water at (roughly) 2kw, usually takes (say) 30 mins...so that's 1kwh.

Add in a bit TV (12v?) for your mains charger (or do you have solar?) and around 5kwh per day should be fine.

I assume your £15 is for a week?...say 50kwh? So that's 30p per kWh? That's a reasonable rate. How do you get any surplus back?
