Club prices getting silly

I'm not one who normally complains about site fees. It's quite simple - you either accept them, or you don't! We are both fortunate in that we are retired with good pensions and don't have to count the 'pennies' too much.  However, I have just attempted to book two nights at Broadway as a stop-over on our way to Devon, next June. For two people on a normal hardstanding pitch on 5 June (not a peak holiday period), we are being asked to pay £39.40 and for the following night, £35.10 - that's over £74 for two nights.  Compare that with 14 nights at the C&CC site at Dartmouth - which is lovely and just as good, if not better than most CAMC sites - for £311.

I think this is ridiculous and will be looking elsewhere.

That said, I am not averse to paying premium prices if it seems justified - we will be paying something like £37pn at Sandringham, this Christmas - but I would expect that at that time of year due to increased demand - but not in what I see as a 'low/mid season' period.

I don't use Club sites very often and if this is the way things are going, together with the threat of introducing deposits I can't see me using them at all in the future.

Rant over - but I think this is a step too far.

Our last 2 bookings of 2 weeks at Haycraft in 2018,  the second of which we cancelled in favour of a 6 week trip to France booked through the Club, including 2 overnight ferries with a cabin from Plymouth to St Malo and back and 4 sites for less than £300 more.

That is incredible value especially as it included overnights on the lovely St Malo crossings.

That is incredible, we are due to travel at the end of April from Portsmouth to St Malo and its well over £300 for a single crossing and that's with a friends discount code, dearer through the club.

We had a long weekend in Winchester last month of which most of the 14 serviced pitches were vacant. Nearly all the standard hardstandings were in use in our 5 days there.

Perhaps understandable at this time of year, unless you book close to your trip you have no idea if the conditions will be sub zero. When that’s the case they don’t really work, as both waste and fresh water freeze. In my experience on all sites in the better weather they are well subscribed and often sell out while there are still standard pitches left.

That's true Steve but on the other hand it could be that now folk can book a h/s pitch they no longer need to book a service one to guarantee a h/s.

Then there is the fact that service pitches usually are a much smaller percentage of the site so will fill up quicker.

As always time will tell.

Maybe true on those sites that has a choice but on the last ten (and more sites) I've been on with SP the rest of the pitches have been all hardstanding so people can't be choosing SP for that reason there? And in anycase grass pitches are closed during late autumn to late spring in some cases.

While it is a fact that the proportion is smaller, it is not as small as you may think. 30 to 40% SP is now the norm. And really it doesn't explain why they go quicker, the only reason must be that there is a demand for them before standard pitches. You seem to be saying that the 'fill up rate' is the same for both? Even if it were then that means SP go first then standard pitches?

Indeed on one site I was on (second weekend of last year's season) there were more outfits on SP than standard, it was 36 out 38 on SP v only 34 outfits over the rest of the site which had about 100+ standard pitches. Seacroft had 33 full service pitches over Christmas yet had spaces on the remaining 30 hardstanding pitches (and grass pitches were closed).

I think time has already told. SP are popular and sell more. That's all the club needs to know really and hence the latest refurb is all SP.

Giving concessionary rates to pensioners is a reason NOT to join C&CC in my view, and I say that as a pensioner.

Why should the general membership, many of whom will be struggling with their bills and will be getting below inflation wage rises, subsidise OAP's who will be getting a 10.1% increase this year? If there are benefits to be had, then they should be available to all members, and not the select few. Thats the view of CAMC, and I agree with them.

When it comes to prices, then they are going up everywhere, and we all have the option of where and how we spend our money

It is just the MO of the C&CC. They have chosen, as a point of difference, to offer a discount to their older members. It's the same as some retail stores have a blanket 20% off every now and then. It's just something they build into their financial model. Personally I wouldn't get too excited about pensioners getting a 10% increase in their pensions as its likely only to apply to the basic state pension, unlikely that occupational pensions will match that figure, unless you are very lucky? By the time you allow for increases in energy, council tax and water bills I expect there won't be much of that increase left! The CMC have clearly not gone down that route and it seems they don't offer any discounts now since the mid week discount disappeared. When that was in place you could argue that the people more likely to benefit from that was pensioners as everyone else was at work when it applied? I am of the view that you take what is on offer. If the C&CC find it too draining on finances they will end it.

I would  interested  in a breakdown of costs too. However  there have been deals in the past where the sites are effectively "free"

Posted on 04/02/2023 17:33

Oh I know we have benifited from them ourselves. This year though BF have increased their prices considerably and not many offers from the club to offset it, no offers of course on single crossings.

Just checked ours, total cost for a 6.2 m caravan and a car one way at the end of April, £367 that's with a £31 discount. We have an outside cabin on a flexi ticket (which was also on an offer price) compare that to our return crossing Rotterdam to Hull mid June also outside Premier cabin £291.

Apologies for being off thread.

Very true David.

However the C&CC do have offers that ALL members can take advantage of even in the high season.

There is no getting away from it that site prices are going up, how folk deal with it is their business but we are hearing it from many sources now, that members are not happy and many saying they are not renewing their membership.

I know we are once again giving it some thought, now that we are back to overseas travel our usage of UK sites is minimal, is it worth keeping the membership going🤔

As said before tax allowances aren't. I think it will be harder for many this year and it's worth searching around if needed.

However CAMC say they are going to promote some offers, just when is the question?! Have they reduced some pitch prices already I wonder, I think there maybe some adjustments going on?

And as I said before nothing can be done about the allowances.

Also and I said a few times, this isn't about something that is essential for life, food, energy... we're talking about taking an outfit they already have and if the only thing they have to worry about  is to a cheaper place to park it they are still very fortunate ni my view.
