wouldn't that be the easiest way for them to contact you if unexpected circumstances arose?

It would if I wished for them to contact me  on route. However I don't.

So if a site you were booked into while on tour ,had a major issue ,  you would just turn up at the locked gates, where you could been made aware by a voice message on you answer phone ,

Correct. However as my phone lives permanently in my RHS front trouser pocket and difficult to access when driving that is where it would remain until we arrived at site.  

An e-mail advising of a cancelled booking would be useful but that would only reach me up until 9am on the day of departure.

I am not against giving sites contact details but since they rarely know I am coming they would be unlikely  to ring me

I am lead to believe there are forum members who tour without booking or are you saying thats not possible in the UK?

👋👋 Perfectly possible. Some of us even use our smart phones while on the road. It works even better if you leave a contact number for sites to call you back if you have to leave a message.😂

They have my mobile numbers but as we don't tend to answer unknown numbers they would have to leave a message. As my first thought would be that it was another cold or scam call, if we were on route we would probably be at the site before I got round to checking for a voice mail.
