Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

Happy days yellspent most of mine on one of the little wood things that bob up and down violently the moment you leave harbour, but had some enjoyable times in St Peter Port, 6 months plus when the Torrey Canyon ran aground, March 67, happy days.laughing

Sorry no costing involved in those days Her Majesties government fed and watered you and provided travel vouchers to get homelaughing

.... Manchester Ship Canal is one I want to repeat, that was different, and very interestingđź‘Ť

I'd prefer to travel along the Danube, Seine or even the Thames ( we did a short cruise from Henley last year).

We rarely repeat anything as so many things to see and little time remaining. The initial WOW of seeing something spectacular for the first time can obviously never be repeated.

plenty of time to do a risk assesment, our trip, we dont call our times away a holiday as we always consider ourselves to be on holiday , starts in May in Dorset and we wont be in Devon until September.

Dont do costings normally but for 70 days away it will average out at approx £25 per night, so if you take into account all the ancillary items for going overthere such as getting the dog up to steam, ferry insurance etc there is not a lot of differance, and if we have 50% of the good weather we encountered last year, that will be a bonus.

Yes, I know what you mean, Mikey. For all the beauty and stunning experiences we've had over the past few years there are so many more out there,  both at home and abroad.

The one place I would like to return to, and hopefully will before long, is Sienna in Italy. I remember walking down this narrow street with no idea what to expect at the end and then emerging in to the huge Piazza del Campo with the bell tower and cathedral nearby. WOW indeed!  smile

One of my hobbies is collecting old children’s fiction (bear with me, this is – kind of – on topic) and one writer I like  a lot bases her stories in real places in Europe and in the UK, although she does give them fictional names – like Hardy!

Amongst fellow collectors there is a bit of a "thing" about visiting the locations and I have visited many over the years, mainly in Brittany.

This year, despite the wanderlust, our travelling is paused, and we will not be going “over there” (or further afield) and I have booked some sites in Kent so I can visit the Kent locations in the books. (Among other things.)

Normally we are charging through Kent en route to the Tunnel and it will be good to linger. Although I know the location of the general area, I need to do a little more research to identify the exact villages but I am stupidly excited about this trip.
