Posted on 03/07/2019 17:12 by young thomasM, perfectly fine to disagree (have ones own opinion)....
my question remains....why? when there are (almost always) other much nicer (non site) spots to rest up .....
im sure 'wild campers' would have selection of places to settle down, from similar sources, again, that doesn't involve laybys...
i don't doubt you seen folk using them, but unlikely to be those 'in the know', merely somone pretty desperate for a break, perhaps?

Went to Cornwall Saturday, stopped overnight Chapel Lane CMC arrived 1.30 pm, Sunday onwards at 8am.
Return trip, layby. Leaving Cornwall 6pm, pulling in around 11pm. Onwards to York 6am. Cant use LNA, gone before we can pay!
Plus already picked a suitable layby, why not, have a caravan, its equipped.

Well I realise that if one or both of you have to be back for work then holiday time is important. But really, wouldn't you arrive home more relaxed if you left Cornwall earlier, took it easy and used one of umpteen sites within minutes of the motorway rather than a layby?

We find the last arrivals time inconvenient in terms of an overnight stop going to Cornwall. We were booked into Minnows one time, got badly delayed through no fault of our own but of course to late to get on site. So we stayed on a CL for £5 a couple of miles further on at Sampford Peverell. It was so lovely we stayed for a few nights when returning home. Wouldn’t do a conventional lay-by nowadays though. Usually filthy and too vulnerable.

Posted on 03/07/2019 19:24 by nelliethehookerThe obvious answer is because they are too mean to use a proper site, apart from when they want to fill up with water and dump their waste.

Posted on 03/07/2019 22:20 byHonestly, I don’t think it’s meanness.
Of course I don’t know what individual m/homers think, but I would guess that those of us used to travelling in Europe with its network of Aires, Stellplatz and Sostas, are just used to pulling in to overnight on a handy stopover, with no associated palaver of getting to a site in time to book in, and so on.
And so, perhaps, some do the same in the UK, using laybyes in the absence of a similar network??? I very much doubt that they would base an entire holiday on doing that.
Truth be told, overnighting in a layby would not be my choice, although we happily use Aires etc “over there”.

Have to agree, some MHs down in the Hayle/Marazion area are spending weeks at a time in lay-bys. We used to play a guessing game each day on how many would be parked up on the front facing St Michaels Mount. Some never moved in a fortnight, parked bumper to bumper. Council finally got fed up and banned parking altogether there now, it’s a cycle path and footway, with a big raised kerb. Mix of foreign and UK vehicles.

Posted on 03/07/2019 22:33 by TinwheelerThere’s one near the CAMC site that’s been there for at least 2years!
You can see the same vans day after day in the clifftop parking areas and lay-bys.
