Reviewing CLs

I love reading reviews of CL sites. More than once we've decided to visit a particular area and stayed on some marvellous CLS as a result of reading a review on here. (In fact just read one for a CL in Essex which looks interesting.)

But why do so few members appear to feel it's worthwhile writing a review? Some have only a couple for last year; some date back even further than that!

I always write a review of CL sites after we use them and wonder why there are so few others. Come on folks, given the questionable commitment of the club to the network it's surely more important than ever that we members do our bit.

We got confused a couple of years ago. I had booked CL, told OH directions were at top of page in book. They were, but on opposite page! We finally realised our mistake late that night in dark, after we were pitched up, had eaten and gone to bed. Too late to phone CL we had booked! We stayed on first CL for a night, had a good laugh with owners, and then shot off to CL we had booked, who found it hilarious luckily! We gave both CLs a good review, and have used both since!embarassed

The very same thing happened to a member who turned up on a CL in the Peak District last year. He was adamant he had booked and the owner apologised to the other 5 occupants for the extra van stopping. The cl he was supposed to be on rang him the following day and he sheepishly moved. Things like this happen.

Thanks, brue, for the recommendation. They do seem to have a strange/different pricing structure though, and no update for 2018. How narrow is the approach to the site, BTW?

It's a lengthy narrow approach but we thought it was worth it. The local walks kept us going in all directions, especially the coast path towards the Salcombe estuary, a beautiful area to explore.

Thanks again, brue. Definitely worth considering then.

It's all well and good taking your frustrations out on the forum,  but there has not been a timeout problem with this forum for some time, in fact I remain logged in all day unless I turn my PC off, is that not the case for others? It has long been suggested that reviews are composed in a word processor and then pasted into the forum. At least using that method you get a spell checker and it makes it easier if you wish to post to multi forums.

Those of you that advocate not posting reviews on here are surely flying in the face of what you hope to achieve, ie the survival and encouragement of the use and development of the CL network. I am puzzled how that is achieved by not posting reviews on here. I am not saying not to post them elsewhere, I would go so far as to encourage people to do that as well. I am probably one of the most prolific review posters on UKCampsite with approaching 200 reviews. I keep a watching brief on most of the free to use forums on our hobby and anyone that does the same will see that this forum has as many if not more posts on a daily basis than others.

As to the content of reviews I just wonder how you police that? I am sure most on here have developed a sixth sense into knowing when a review is useful. If reviews are a bit below par on detail then surely even more reason for the people that have the future of CL's at heart to submit reviews as a counter balance?

At the end of the day where do people start their search for CL's? Am I wrong in thinking that it is more likely to be the CL review section on this forum? No doubt they then might look elsewhere but I suspect it all starts here.

I don't have frustrations about this forum, just Disappointment. However, to prove you wrong, I was timed out last night trying to contact a CLyell....  Then could not log in again to this abomination of a forum you seem to love so muchyellyell.

I don't stay logged in all day as I have better things to do with my time, if you prefer a sedentary life style then so be it, it's your choice.  Why should I have to resort to a word process to post a review??? No other forum requires this faffing about, not even the very small ones, that have less than five hundred memberssurprised

By not posting CL reviews on here (But posting where they are appreciated) and also giving my  reasons, then perhaps "The Minders" of this forum(You?) can make sure that the message will get through to the  people that matter and not give glib answers to points that have been raised.

I personally, don't start my search at the "CL review section", as you like to call it. My search depends on where I will be going, my choice of CL is mine alone, so I don't need a sixth sense, as you put it. The same as TDA, I ask trusted fellow users for their opinions and that of their friends, as well as talking to the owners concerned. It's never let me down yet.

At the end of the day, (what a horrible terminology) as you put it, I think that you are wrong in your thinking of where people start to look,You are not the peoples champion, so please don't speak for them.

Good to note that there are more reviews just lately. In fact we've already booked a couple of weeks as a result and would have done a third one if it hadn't been booked solid for the dates we wanted.

Keep up the good work, folks! smile

I post reviews of CL's on here and on UKcampsites.co.uk as I believe it is imperative to support CL's to keep them going.

Use reviews on both those resources and google maps where you can search for CLs and find google reviews (something the younger generation hold credence in) to get an idea of what is what.

Have found that sites/CLs with non recent reviews are invariably hidden nuggets that aren't advertised for a reason!! cool

Many years ago I used an unknown ski resort that was almost like a private mountain, that was understood by users to be 'kept quiet' about. Unfortunately, a national Radio presenter joined our party and blabbed to all and sundry. That ski resort is now overcrowded and full of blocks of rental apartments. cry

I used to write reviews for every CL we visited on here M, much like Nellie does, but when the website was changed, many of the reviews I had created were lost. I was very annoyed, and decided still to write them, but over on another forum (you know where!). Two other aspects of writing reviews on here wound me up as well, the blasted time out feature, and  it is not easy to post photographs without cropping them or using a photo hosting site. Hence I have given up on here, but still try and  help CL owners by reviewing sites elsewhere.

I read your review for Heath Cottage, near Tenby. Very good it was too 👍 We’re there for four days in June 🙂

Reviews are useful, not only to Members but to CL Owners like me too. I was wondering if others here feel that it's easy for members to actually leave a review?

To my mind it's not an intuitive process - especially for the occasional user of CL's or Club Together.

There's no big button that invites a review.  Once on the CL's page you have to click the Reviews Tab, and then in small red writing in the top right-hand corner there's the request to "Review and rate this site".

Wouldn't it be more intuitive to have a nice big button (as per the CL Website or Email on the top page) that says "Review this CL"

When I went looking for this link the other day it took me a good couple of minutes!

Agree totally CG. It's not a good website to leave a review on. Clunky actually finding where to leave a review, and no method of inserting photos. The dreaded time out seems not so bad lately though. So much easier to review sites on other websites, so I tend to do it elsewhere with photographs. Site owners are actively encouraged to join Caravan Chat and to post details of their site there, with photographs, might help one or two who haven't had an up to date review of their site for a while.
