Network Shrinkage

I see from the current magazine that we have lost a further 13 CLs with no new ones at all this month. Particularly disconcerting is that yet another one that I have visited has closed. I'm beginning to wonder if a visit from me is the "kiss of death".

Why are we seeing this inexorable decline? Is it the increasing desire for full facilities which make it uneconomic for small operators, a shortage of "a new generation of adventurers"or whatever that buzzphrase was, the minimal cash return that make owners think "it's not worth the bother" or is it really all my fault?

Inflation calculator shows£1-50 in 1980 is £7.23 today.Likewise£2-50 is £12.06.  From what we the payers consider a fair price it cant be that ,that is the cause of the shrinkage. I recon on under £10 for basic sits and £12/14 for EHU and hard standing. Very few Cls are in that range today. My previous post I believe meets most of the reasons.

Fisherman.  I have posted many times on the costs (and time) of running a CL, so won't bore you again, but in just to answer you point about EHU and HS in  terms of Return on Investment, it cost me circa £5,000 to instal EHU 5 years ago.

I'm about to spend circa £8,000 on Hardstanding. No doubt some CL's can do h/s cheaper but my site is on a slope which means levelling / carting soil etc. and I don't have my own machinery or farm labour, so will need to hire it in.  I reckon the ROI for me will be 4-5 years, and we are a relatively busy CL, charging £17/night. IF we stay as busy as we have been and don't get more competition locally.  For many CL's the ROI would be longer.

Would you be willing to take that kind of risk with your own money? Maybe I'm crazy to keep investing in our CL.

Not at all, from me a CL user and willing/accepting to pay the going rate, but you may be crazy trying to explain it to some hard of understanding people who conveniently forget the cost involved in providing facilities.

Cholsey- no problem with your thinking. It just reinforces my argument that the 5 rule is stupid in todays day and age. I would ask you the same question, why carry in with such a restriction. Factor in the competition- ie  going to Haven in North Wales in April - Europitch on a superb site at £11 per night all in. Wonder how long you will be in the network.

I doubt that Cholsey will be too worried about Haven competition in North Wales Fisherman. If I am looking to tout in Bucks I am hardly likely to choose a site in North Wales just because it is cheap.

Don't follow the argument - all I used was an actual instance of what Cls are up against, both in cost of setting up in todays days and the competition out there. Probably same kind of comparisons are seen all over the country.

As Fish has just quoted a pitch in North Wales at £11 for a Europitch I don't understand your comment. Care to explain?

Regardless of location, I don't think that most regular CL users would want to stay at a Haven type site. That is why they choose CLs in the first place, not just due to the money saving aspect.

Location is important to me although it makes sense to shop around for the best price in the location you want to be in. Hardstanding doesn't bother me. I would prefer a grass pitch if it meant some cost saving.
