Am I being unreasonable?

I was in touch with a CL over the weekend to book a 7 night stay next May. Looked very good, toilet/shower, dog friendly, great reviews, ideal for where we wanted to stay and just £15 a night. Ideal for us I thought ......

.....until I had a reply saying, yes a pitch was available, please let us have the usual details and "a deposit of £60"! surprised

Now I've got nothing against being asked for a reasonable deposit and I can understand particularly why CL owners might want to do so. But, really, the equivalent of 4 nights for a 7 night stay! Is that reasonable. Needless to say I'm looking elsewhere in the same area.

(Out of interest, no other CL booked for next year has asked us for a deposit of any sort.)

However as you are not prepared to lodge a deposit you have taken the obvious correct step and gone elsewhere even though it seems you lost your preferred choice

You obviously haven't read all of the OPs comments, AD. He has no objection to paying a deposit, he just consider that the size of the deposit requested was excessive....please keep up.wink

Yes I think you are. You  are asking the owner to commit a weeks pitch to you with no reciprocal commitment from yourself.  I very very rarely book campsites but when I do I dont think its unreasonable to pay a deposit but  when I take a package holiday or book a ferry I would be amazed it I could do it without. However as you are not prepared to lodge a deposit  you have taken the obvious correct step and gone elsewhere  even though it seems you lost your preferred  choice

Welcome back, David.  Hope Cuba lived up to expectations.

Please read my OP and subsequent posts again. We are regular supporters of CLs and, as I think, I've made clear, quite relaxed about paying a reasonable deposit,  although, more often than not, these are not required. In fact, I always ask when booking if the owners would like a deposit. This site was the first I contacted in the area  -  we felt, and still do, that asking 4 nights deposit for a 7 night stay was unreasonable and certainly not in line with other CLs. So we have booked elsewhere in the area and, as I think I've said at least 3 times now, good luck to the owners if they can make a go of their CL with those terms.

Edit - of course, it may be that they simply wanted to discourage us as dog owners, but weren't up front in saying so! wink

You seem to have misread the OP, David.

Welcome back.

What was the point of this thread?.  Apparently the OP chose one  camping site because the deposit was cheaper than another site. That's all ------Why make a big issue out of that simple choice.  wink

Is that relevant? I hadn’t even noticed the timing but it’s good to see your holiday hasn’t changed you.

I'm not sure flying is currently flavour of the month. I think there has been some droning on about delays.

The point, K, was to raise awareness of our experience and just investigate whether it was a trend for CLs. And I think the responses have actually been very illuminating with a marked contrast between those, like us, who regularly use CLs  and those who don't or can't. I don't think there's any reason to question the validity of any thread is there?  Nearly 100 responses show more interest than many other threads. But thank you for your continued interest and, yes, we're more than happy with our alternative destination.  smile
