Is this a sad sign of the times

We have just been on a wonderful 3 week trip to Scotland in our Motorhome, staying at the caravan and Motorhome club sites. We have often sat out in the sun and then nipped for a quick walk with the dogs . For over 30 years we have left chairs / tables etc outside feeling we could trust our fellow travelers. Not this time though !!! someone helped themselves to a very expensive foldaway chair and a pot dog bowl ! Well I hope whoever it was enjoys the chair and it collapses on them but at 180£ very unlikely.

now after 30 years everything will be going away when we move away from the unit . One bad apple has spoilt it for a lot of honest people 😞😞

PS. The culprits weren’t fellow campers but intruders into the site.

+1 Tinny, it didn’t happen to me it was a near LV, a full line of scuba gear including the temp drying line🤷🏻‍♂️. I’m not that trusting I’m afraid. I’m a firm believer of don’t trust anyone you can’t vouch for/don’t know👍🏻

We had our aqua roll handle stolen on a commercial site I mentioned it while in the reception I was then taken to a storage unit and told to take my pick out of the pile lay on the floor which had been left behind over the years

I suspect camp sites are known to be easy pickings for local ne'er-do-well types in some places☹️

Sometime ago my parents had the caravan broken into and the TV nicked...This was in England (Nottinghamshire) The police reckoned that having an awning gave the towrags cover so that no one saw what they were doing. The door was damaged and TV gone, must have been desperate as mobile TVs in those days were heavy & bulky

Let’s not pretend that things are any different today, I recall such things happening in my early years of ‘camping’! We were told to chain our bikes together on our pitch in the 70s! Still some went missing during our stay on one site.

If it’s not likely to rain we often leave our chairs outside, however they are nothing like the value of the OP’s and there loss would be more inconvenience than financial. I am constantly amazed by what folk do leave lying about on the pitch or table outside. A phone on the pitch next to us on a recent trip.

We have never had anything stolen, even while tenting for 30 years where it is not so easy to lock things away. However, shortly after getting a caravan and whilst on the Buxton site, somebody tried to break in when we were out. They must have been disturbed as there was just some damage to the door near the lock. A bit annoying on a new van and would have been expensive to fix. Fortunately most could be masked by fitting a fiamma additional door lock.

I trust everyone until they prove not deserving of that trust. However, I ensure my kit in the outdoors is secure behind locks & bolted doors so as not to entice ne’er do wells to take an interest. I don’t point fingers but I do know they are out there in small numbers.
