Safefill gas bottle

just want to share my experience of safefill gas bottle, l have been looking at them for a long time now and have always put off by the price tag at £150.00. I managed to find one for sale on gumtree for £45.00 for the 7.5kg bottle which was only 6 months old so bargin. My local service station was fine with me filling it up, it had some in so l topped it up which cost me about £4.00. Our first trip was 2 weeks in France, we had 2 weeks of using the cadac via bbq point oven and hob etc and we had 2 nights running the fridge on gas. When we returned home l popped to the local service station to top the bottle up to see how much we had used. I was shocked when it only took £2.37 to fill it back up again. I only carry this one bottle in my gas locker now and it fits a treat. The saving to be had with this bottle is great. Check them out for yourself.

Back to the discussion about SafeFill cyinders and filling them up.

I have the 11kg version of these excellent cylinders fitted into my self built motorhome.  I decided to fit one of these rather than having an underslung tank from the likes of Gasit or similar on the grounds of saving weight.

However two of the problems I experienced were:-

1. Having to remove it from the cupboard it is fitted into each time I needed to refill it.

2. Most especially when touring France where it is illegal to fill a stand alone portable cylinder and in the UK where in real terms very few LPG filling stations actually allow their refilling.

So to overcome these problems I made a simple modification and fitted an external filling point along with a simple modification to the pipe to the cylinder.

The modification I did was suggested by the owner of Gasit who sell a wide range of valves and fitments.  OK it cost me a few bob to carry out the modifications, but here almost 4 years later the combined convenience and far lower prices has resulted in a far easier life when out touring throughout the UK and France.

This year we have been away for 10 weeks during with not one night on EHU and yet we have only used £10.20 worth of gas smile

For safety and to comply with EU regs the likes of Gasit, Gaslow, Alugas, have a non-return valve in the cylinder connection and one in the actual filler connection.  I can see how the latter could be achieved but how did you achieve the former?

They are seperate fill and take off points. At least one of the filler adapters sold for use in other countries than the UK is also equipped with a non return valve which has in the past caused me grief when there has not been enough pump pressure to open it.

No idea about Safefill but Gaslow certainly has and I assume that is the case for Gasit and Alugas.

They all do, and that is my point PD.  MillieMaster has said he has modified the way he fills his Safefill.  I am asking how, or even if, the safety valves other systems use have been replicated in his setup.

Posted on 16/11/2018 15:11

Of course the SafeFill cylinders only have a single entry point and despite me writing and indeed speaking to the man at SafeFill suggesting they ought to consider getting the cylinders manufacturers in Norway to manufacture them with 2 entry points, of course nothing happened!!

So I made contact with the very helpful boss of Gasit and came up with a system where I have a panel mounted filling point which has a length of hose on the inside that has a on/off lever valve fitted into its lenth and then beyond that a 'pigtail' which I attach to the tank before I go to a LPG filling station.

It's a bit of a faff doing so, but it is safe and it works perfectly and I have used it throughout the UK and Europe.

If and when I build my next conversion, next time I will fit an Alugas tank as it comes as a fully finished unit https://www.autogasshop.co.uk/alugas-ce-11kg-single-cylinder-kit-1279-p.asp

Any chance you could post a couple of pics of your setup?

OK, here are 3 x shots: -

1. The first one shows the external door of the fully sealed but floor drop out vented cupboard.

2. The top of the tank where you can just see the standard regulator attached to the top of the cylinder.

3. The lever open/close valve along with the high pressure hose which is attached at the other end to the Gasit panel mounted refilling point.

As I explained before, all I have to do when I need to refill the cylinder is to turn off the top valve on the cylinder and then remove the regulator and then screw the filling hose into position.  Then when tightly attached, the valve on the cylinder is opened along with the inline lever valve.

When the tank has been filled it is essential to close/shut the lever valve and then the valve on top of the cylinder before swapping the hoses over........ JOB DONE

Certainly a bit of a faff Milliemaster but if it works for you - Great. The fact here is that you are getting much cheaper LPG so that is what it’s all about.
