MPG When Towing

Hi!

I've just done a journey from Looe in Cornwall to Liverpool, towing my 4 berth caravan (weighing about 1000 Kg) with a 1.6 petrol towcar. The car usually averages around 40 mpg when solo, but I managed 30 mpg during this journey, which was mainly A roads and motorways.

I was just curious to know if that mpg was good, bad or expected.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Neil.

I get about 50mpg on a long run in my Seat Exeo, and it drops to about 28mpg when towing a 1400kg 4 berth.

It was worse, in both respects, before it was remapped from 142 to 192Bhp

I wouldnt believe what the computer says  .Full tank to full tank is the closest you will get

My trip towing says 25mpg reality 19mpg  Hyundai santa fe 195bhp towing 1500kg from weston s mare to padstow

Our Mazda is as accurate as checking against tankfulls will allow. Did it with three consecutive fills and it was still within one mpg. This was after fitting new front tyres as before that it was reading a bit high.

The computer read out on my Passat is more accurate when towing than soLo. On our recent trip to Austria the brim to brim figures were within 1mpg of the computer however the solo figures are adrift.

Does the mpg matter? I'd have thought that the ability to safely tow your caravan was more important than a few more miles to a tank.

I have to agree MM for me its always been about haveing a towcar that was more than capable of doing the job regardless of the mpg..I,ve always said that if you want good mpg then dont tow a caravan full stop.Putting a caravan on the back of any car makes a nonsense of any fuel figures issued by the manufacturer which in many cases are pure fantasy anyway.

MM, i generally agree and if solo mileage is low a few mpg makes b8gger all saving. From reading numerous posts over the years In practice the fuel usage or economy for most when towing is in the range 22-28mpg almost irrespective of car/van combination. I have said many times that changing a car just to reduce fuel costs is a waste of money UNLESS there are other significant reasons to do so. However for those of us like me who commute 300 miles every week, at some point economy has to be considered otherwise i would use my sons 15mpg petrol RR Sport...... and that is solo!

How do you rate that All Track you have. Did you need a special tow bar to cope with the higher ride height over the standard model?

Cheers.
