MPG When Towing

Hi!

I've just done a journey from Looe in Cornwall to Liverpool, towing my 4 berth caravan (weighing about 1000 Kg) with a 1.6 petrol towcar. The car usually averages around 40 mpg when solo, but I managed 30 mpg during this journey, which was mainly A roads and motorways.

I was just curious to know if that mpg was good, bad or expected.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Neil.

I have just completed my last trip of the year from North Lancashire to the Cotswolds.  The run down on congested M6/M5, 210 miles @ 34.2 mpg.  Coming home on M5, A roads from Worcester to Warrington, M56 & M6 took about 30 minutes longer, 219 miles @ 33.9 mpg.

This is with a Euro 5 Merc C220 Cdi estate with manual gearbox towing 1,450 Kg.  My annual average towing mpg. this year is 33.14.  Last years figure was slightly better @ 33.65 with an overall average including mainly urban solo running of 40.45 mpg..  With 7 weeks still to go, I have not done the overall calculation for this year yet.

Don't bother working it out ..... it'll be what it'll be. If you want mpg, leave the caravan at home wink

A manual Merc? I didn't think anyone bought one 😉

Our 2017 Ford Kuga 2.0 Diesel Powershift towing Swift Conqueror 480 1450kg.

If I try to keep as near as 60mph 26-28,

Drop down to around 55mph 30 -32,

However if I drop my speed down to 50mph 32-34+

As regards head winds or Cornwall any one guess ?

I'd say its normal for a small engine towing a light caravan.
