Barum Tyres

Hello

We are having difficulty finding a pair of good quality tyres for our ten year old Bailey Pageant Bordeaux.  The size is 195/70 R14 and the recommended load rating according to the handbook is 96.  We had hoped to get a Michelin or some other well known make, but the size is proving difficult, most tyre fitters only offer a budget brand.

We cover a lot of mileage and want something quality.  The dearest we can find is Barum, a sub group of Continental with a 101 load rating which seems excessive, but National Tyres can get them for us.  Does anyone have any experience of Barum Tyres?  We have never heard of them.

Is anyone else experiencing problems sourcing quality tyres for older caravans, or is it just us? We love our caravan and want to give it the best!

You could try:- Blackcircles.com

They list a few tyres including Michelin in your size but you would have to ask their advice re the load rating.

Hope this is of help to you.

Barum are indeed made by Continental.......

I had them on an Audi TT a few years ago and they were fine.....

I would buy them again......

Hi there Barum are manufactered under licence by Continenetal ,but they are a budget tyre. There is a tyre called the GT Kargomax which is similar to the Barum but in my opinion is a better tyre and it carries a 104 load rating .I have just rang Michelin and the only tyre that they manufacture in that size is the Energy Saver + on a 91T load rating which is a carr tyre and not suitable for a caravan. If i can help further call me on 07802 661334  .

Sorry I missed the saver+  Blackcircles.com also list Dunlop and Uniroyal if you are looking for a well known branded tyre and they are suitable for a vans so can be used on a caravan.

CC Advice and Training

"Tyres, however, are not specially made for caravan use. Caravans use either tyres made for cars, or ones designed for use on small vans. While there are tyres designed specifically for use on trailers, these are only available in specifications which suit models like small camping trailers, or one or two specialist types of larger commercial trailer. All caravans use car or light van tyres"

I had Bridgestones on my last caravan, these might be the up to date equivalents. I am not sure why you are concerned about having a higher load index that is required, wouldn't that add a little extra degree of safety margin?

Thank you so much for your suggestions, a great use of the forum for us.

Have ruled out the Michelin as it is below the load rating we need.

Will look into the Bridgestone, thanks.

The Barum sounds okay and is a good load rating.

Will make a decision in next day or two.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Hi David ,yes Bridgestone is an excellent product and is a premium brand tyre and it has the 104 load rating so is an excellent choice for caravans fitted with that size tyre.👍

Barum are the independent aftermarket version of continental tyres. They are continental tyres for the cost conscious and are good.

I see your problem, that really is a poor choice for 195/70 R14 (96)

I would change the tyre size to a standard caravan tyre 185/80 R14 and increase the load rating to 102.

This is an inch wider diameter overall (you need 1/2" all round clearance extra but this should not be a problem) but give you lots of choice of higher load rated tyres. This brings in a lot of the light truck and van tyres that are far better than the car tyre options.
