Apologies if wrong section- mod, please feel free to move :)

So we pick up our new motorhome in 2 weeks and I'm about to sort out insurance. We put it in my name as I have 9 year plus NCD on my car, husband has less. I think I have just realised that NCD can only apply to one car rather than multiple so does this mean I effectively have to start from scratch with zero no clams for my M/H?

I've tried the CC insurance but want to shop around also and see if there are better deals  - not just cost but the whole shabang - I have a leaflet for Safeguard but any of you seasoned motorhomers out there that can help suggest would also be a godsend. The rig is new (2016) so this also may be a factor for replacments with policies if there does happen to be a major issue

Thanks in advance

I've never had a problem with this.  I found that many insurers would give the same NCD, or at least an introductory rate, on a second vehicle.

Having only one car now as well as the MH, the problem goes away.  I own the MH with spouse as named driver and she owns the car with me as named driver.

Full  protected NCD on both.

yes you will have to insure separately starting from zero on motor home unless you cancell on car and move it to motorhome but will still need prove of no claims from present insurer if moving to specialised insurer going through this at present time

Bought my M/H in May and insured through the CC and they gave me 25% discount ,as I full NCD on my car ( which I kept) and they just wanted to see proof

Like any insurance it pays to shop around. we are insured through Saga.  Most insurers welcome new business.

but there are other factors that could influence your choice such as;

Recovery in uk or abroad.  Size matters over certain lengths and weights may restrict the recovery. Some insurers include it,  some clubs offer these services through membership.

If you are novice campers, it may pay to use these services until you find your feet.

Some insurers offer new replacement in case of insurance up to years, some three years.  Useful in a case where the writeoff values fall almost by 25%   In that period.

im pretty sure Saga (who already insured my (at that time) two cars) just replicated my NCD when we bought our first MH.

been protected with them since day one....ask them for confirmation...

I found that though I couldn't get the full no claims discount that I had on my cars I didn't have to start at zero. I think I started at 35%.

it also worked in reverse, when I sold motorhome last year when my husband became too ill to travel I could not use the full no claims I had accrewed on MH on car insurance.

Although my car is insured with Saga I found Caravan Guard to be very good for MH insurance.

Like many car insurers the premium includes breakdown cover in UK, Europe is extra.

you will be starting a new insurance policy so probably get a discount but will have to accrue next one years ncd that's what I ment by starting from zero to build up ncd

I was in exactly the same position when we changed from a caravan to a motorhome in 2013. I kept the NCB with the car and started afresh with the motorhome via the Caravan Club as I had my caravan insured with them. They did give an introductory offer which in effect was the same as having five years NCB. The only thing I couldn't do was to protect the NCB until I earnt it in my own right.

I find the practice unbelievable. It is daft that the no claims belongs to the vehicle. Logically it is the driver who is either accident free or not, vehicles don't have accidents by themselves.
