Cash only in on site shops

Can I ask the question about cash only being accepted in onsite shops?

I am sure this has been discussed, but I think it is weird in this day and age that reception staff/wardens only accept cash and do not take cards to pay for any extras you might require.

I realise that a machine obviously comes with a cost, but my reason for asking is that having just visited a C&M site, it was very hot and a young mother and her three young children came into the reception/shop area to purchase an ice cream for her children. When she asked if they take cards, she was told, no we only take cash, then the young mother said to her children they could not have an ice cream because she only had a card and no cashon her at all. The little ones were very upset and they all left having purchased nothing, so a lost sale.

I understand that the staff/wardens run the sale of essentials etc separate from the club, but in this day and age and with more and more young families taking up Caravaning or motorhoming they do not carry cash, we are a cashless society now and I think reception staff/ wardens need to address this issue.

I know before anyone says it that you should perhaps take some cash with you, but the younger generation are a cashless and online generation.

What do you think, am I being ridiculous?

lol....and I can tell the time on my credit card.....time to stop spendingwink

i always use a card for site fees, here or abroad, why would I go the cashpoints/bank, get out loads of cash (for the uk siteswink) and then hand it all over....id have to go back to the bank again for more...unless I drew out loads....

so, I use a card.....like just about everyone I've ever seen paying for pitches....after all, who carries £400 cash for a fortnights holiday on a CC site......?

Quite a lot of people actually, when you stand on the other side of the counter booking people in it is surprising how many pay by cash.

as JK says school holidays quite a few people come into reception with cash, some with all their holiday money in an envelope and count it out. Not everyone has a lot of disposable income and the only way some people can afford to go on holiday is putting a bit by every week from house keeping and the like, a lot of the people who pay with cash are so called youngsters.

With the recent problems with banks ,  I would suggest carrying as much cash as you may need to spend.

Proved right (smug emoji). When the local petrol station card system went down. Just me and the local gypsy had cash for a full tank.

No need to carry an additional £100 if you have that already.  wink

but if I needed to brim my tank, it'd be £100 to fill it leaving me with an empty wallet & then I wouldn't be able to buy anything from the site shop. In 35+ years of carrying a credit card I've always been able to use it to pay for my fuel .... the chances of the system being down is slim - at best.

But surely you only need to carry sufficient extra cash to purchase enough fuel to get you to the nearest petrol station who's card system is working. A  look on your sat nav and a quick  phone call to confirm card system is in use is all that's needed. Simples.laughing

But would you know before you brimmed your car that the card system was down? 😉

About ten days ago we filled up the car (Discovery) with diesel plus a can of petrol (for the Quad), and by OH got to the till the card system had gone  down. He came back out to the car and between us we had enough cash to pay (£116). Meanwhile the rest of the queue were fiddling about with bits of paper and details and the pumps were switched off.

We don't always have that much, but we're never without (divided between the two of us).

What's wrong with using cash. It's legal tender. The Site staff buy those items from their own pockets, why should they not be reimbursed in cash. Lets face it, there are thousands of cash points throughout the UK why not use them.

I think the bits and bobs sold by site wardens is a little sideline making a small profit, for which they have to buy the stuff out of their own funds.

On such a small scale they probably dont make much out of it for their effort. Introducing Card transactions is a step towards accounts and the good old Dept of Rev. Add that rigmarole to the  business and the little earner is not worth the bother.
