Internal spare wheel mount

Hi,

I'm considering moving our spare wheel from the chassis mounted AL-KO spare wheel carrier into the internal locker under our transverse fixed bed. The advantages I see as easy access, a clean spare wheel, security and a weight saving as I will also remove the spare wheel carrier. We have a 2021 Coachman Laser 575 caravan. I believe some Swift caravans have internal spare wheel mounts - does anyone know where I can buy one as I have been unable to find one online?

Many thanks,

Roger

I think you need something like this although I'm not sure how it secures to the floor (the picture isn't that good).

Spare Wheel Cone kit

I did the exact opposite to what you are doing as we prefer to have the space under the bed for accessories. Once the wheel is in there it doesn't leave much room for other things. Each to their own of course, you may have enough room for bulky items in other places :)

Andy.

Thanks Andy - however the Cone you link is actually part of the AL-KO carrier kit.

Yes, I think you're right. I've attached a picture of what you need. Could your local dealership source one for you?

Spot on - having the part number is really helpful - thanks. My local dealer also sells Swifts so should be able to source the part.

Many thanks, R

As AD says you will save very little weight by taking the alko spare wheel carrier off ,as he suggests lodge the wheel in under the bed.and to save money how about just screwing a couple of wood blocks in place to hold it

I removed my Also carrier and wheel from under the van . The carrier is in the loft should I sell the van and I carry the spare in the car when I go away. From memory I think it saves 24 kilos which when you you see how little payload caravans have is quite considerable.

Although it's a truly horrible design  it is nowhere near 24kg in weight. According  to Alko it's around 8kg according  to model

I read it that it was the cage and putting the wheel in the car that came to 24kg.

No idea on the weight of a wheel- heavy! 😱🤣
