Internal spare wheel mount

Hi,

I'm considering moving our spare wheel from the chassis mounted AL-KO spare wheel carrier into the internal locker under our transverse fixed bed. The advantages I see as easy access, a clean spare wheel, security and a weight saving as I will also remove the spare wheel carrier. We have a 2021 Coachman Laser 575 caravan. I believe some Swift caravans have internal spare wheel mounts - does anyone know where I can buy one as I have been unable to find one online?

Many thanks,

Roger

I read it that it was the cage and putting the wheel in the car that came to 24kg.

No idea on the weight of a wheel- heavy! 😱🀣

What a superb ideaπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ». I just wish I had thought of that instead of laying under the van with road gunk falling on me & all over me. The wheel will be dry, clean & easy to access. Thanks for the heads up😊

Just weighed the carrier, 5kg. I have no knowledge of the weight of the internal wheel fitment but just removing the carrier alone doesn't save much weight. I think the spare wheel is 19 or 20 kg so moving the wheel to the car gets the best weight saving  in both cases you get a clean spare wheel and easier access should you need to change it.

Do you leave the caravan wheel in the car all the time that you are away or store it used the van when on site?

Nellie, it depends on how long we are on a site and whether we want to use the car. Overnight or short stops It stays in the car. Until very recently we had 2 dogs so we tend to choose sites to walk from. Longer stays if the awning is up I put it in there out of the way under the table with a cover over it.

A custom made tray in the floor accommodated the spare in my old Avondale. Why on earth all UK manufacturers don't do it is beyond me. They seem far more interested in trendy new decals and "exciting" upholstery than practical improvements to design.
