Hi.

Currently  on site at York. Paid my £25.00 for 12 months access only to find that download speed is 0.08mb/s or 80 kilo bits in old money. Takes 10 minutes to download a page, 3 to 4 minutes just to log on/off. I have tried 3 different devices and can see two masts situated 50 and 70 foot away. Could the C.C determine 1. Is there a fault at York which is limiting broadband? 2. What their agreement with the service provider specifies as the site download speed? Third day here. First few hours was excellent speeds. Something appears amiss.

Yes, we found it less than reliable when we were there too.

Daft thing is, we did get a very good 3G signal (even 4G at times - you get it in the town and it sometimes stretches out to Rowntree) so tended to use the phone as a hot spot there.

Have you spoken to the site staff,  they may have a reason or possibly one of the boosters has tripped, and unless they are advised of a problem, then you will never find out, then come back on here and update us,Undecided

According to the CC info York  Rowntree, although in a city, is only a bronze rated site. So a maximum of 8mb spread across 98 pitches. As York is normally fairly full the wifi is never going to be that good with such a poor bandwidth. On sites like this it would make much more sense to have a low powered router, in say the information hut, where you could go to link to the internet. Trying to provide an internet sevice to the caravan in these circumstances, just isn't viable.

Thank you.

UndecidedGood grief! 8mb! Is the problem the service provider or that there is no fibre to the cabinet nearby. I run at 16mb at home on copper some 1.5 miles frm the exchange as measured by cable route! The York site is in a city!

Is the challenge the service level agreement with the service provider?

I was at York earlier in the year and the service then was good. It is very poor at the moment. By the way this was written in a cafe in the centre of York. Quicker to walk in than use site Wi-Fi.

Hmm...

I believe that you will find, as I have in the past, that the staff will point you towards the fault line number. Been there in the past. No thanks.

On investigating further it looks as though the speed could be up to 16mb shared. If you look at one part of the web site it says

Bronze

Lower speed connection
Speeds into site range from 1Mb to 8Mb (shared across the whole site)

However, if you delve deeper into what bronze means, it says this:-

What makes this a Bronze Wi-Fi site?

Whilst every effort is made to provide high speed connectivity onto these sites, their location and where they are on
the BT plan for rollout of High Speed Internet, along with the capacity of the local exchanges, determines that we are only able to get one or two broadband connections onto site. Each range from 1Mb to 8Mb of download speed which is to be shared across the whole site.

So it all depends how many feeds there are into Rowntree, one or two.
