So what did the Club ever do for Motorcaravanners?

It’s a while now since the Club was renamed, to reflect that there are lots of motorhomers among Members - but apart from the name change, what has and does the Club plan to do to cater effectively for motorhomers?

Well there has been a programme of improving motorhome servicepoints, to provide drive-over grey water drains, but at the club Site I most recently stayed at there was no lighting at this service point (unlike the others) so using it after dark (and it was dark at 4.30pm that day) was a matter of struggling with a torch.  But I haven’t noticed anything else specifically for motorhomers and in response a suggestion that the Club should develop overnight parking stops for motorhome like the Aires on the continent, I read somewhere that the Club’s only response was to wonder whether a discussion about whether this was a more appropriate thing for the Government rather than the Clubs to be considering.

CAMC is of course a commercial operator of full scale caravan sites and jolly good they are too but these cater primarily for people who want to stay for quite a number of days, like caravanners do, while lots of motorhomers (certainly on the Continent) make lots of use of more basic overnight parking, to stay for one or two nights only and then move on.  Some motorhomers do use their vehicles like caravans and stay on a Site for a while but lots more enjoys their holidays by keeping moving along.

For holidaying in this mode motorhomers don’t need a toilet block, resident staff and manicured grass around them every night; on most nights they don’t need much more than parking, a supply of drinking water, a drain for grey water and somewhere to empty the chemical toilet.  CAMC should be just as capable of building good Night Halt locations as it is at building full scale caravan sites - and operating them profitably.  There are lots of Aires on the continent which charge good money (and use barrier entry operated with credit cards etc) as well as the free ones provided (as a tourist facility and an attraction) by many local authorities.

There may be an argument for local authorities to build Aires as tourist attractions etc but there is also, quite separately, an argument for CAMC showing initiative in building a network of Aires in UK as a service to it’s Motorhome Members.  I think a network of CAMC Motorhome Nightstops would compliment the network of Club Sites and serve to promote them too - for example each Night Halt could easily display advertising material about nearby Club Sites.  And motorhomers who use Aires also tend to use full scale caravan sites periodically as well, for example to have a ‘laundry day”.

Isn’t someone on the Club’s staff or committees already thinking about this avenue of development - and if so can we hear something about their ideas?

I’ve seen several unpleasant personal traits revealed

The worst I can imagine is the view from behind of those with their head in the sand.  But it does show from where the design of the new logo was obtained.

Perhaps 'harped on' is an oblique reference to a site being heavenly.wink

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

Presumably that would be anyone whose views differ from yours,  PD, no matter how rationally and thoughtfully they present their case? undecided

No it is the continual repetition of meaningless statements made in an effort to negate good points that cause me to think of ostriches. Where a good counter point is made I am quite happy to accept that.

Exactly my point PD. One man's  (person's) "meaningless statement" is obviously another's "good point", but you are not the arbiter of that (nor am I, nor BB come to that.)

But the sort of rudeness and ridicule that has sometimes been blatantly used does nothing to further the debate does it?

So why be rude?

I don't have the exact figures to hand but it could be as many as 50% of all MHers.....

I would go further than that  based on the fact only about a third of the motorhome owners in the UK are members of the Club,(derived from 30 percent membership figures) The majority of the 250/300 thousand motorhome and campervan owners don't see membership suiting them.

Give it up BB, leave it to the Club to give feedback. I would have thought you would have realised you are wasting your time on those with their head in the sand.

I have absolutely no idea where you gather your figures from. I would have thought though that if a third of motorhome owners were members that would indicate a high level of success for CC

..but it's not that easy to tour in that manner during the summer... everyone seems to book well in advance...wink

but booking everything in advance, while guaranteeing a pitch, makes for a pretty boring tour...doing exactly what was on the 'plan'...

alright for some, I guess...

bit, these days, theres no provision for the 'traditional' swerve left or right, go anywhere vanning...

my point is that, with just a few pitches set aside from the 'book a year ahead' system, impromptu touring (on cc sites, and in the spirit of the club and its declared MH inclusivity) would at least have a chance...

You are generalising again BB. You know it’s possible to tour all over this country much as you do overseas, if you use a combination of site types. We have been doing it for the last 30 plus years, all seasons, weekends and midweek, and unless we want a long stay (28 days) we never book other than perhaps our first site, and that usually day before the off. Much like you book your ferry overseas to guarantee a ferry berth. Its perfectly possible to do this with a caravan as well most of the time. We often change our routes, places to see much like you can, depending on what the weather is doing. Nellie does caravan tours like this, all year round, might only have his first site confirmed.

If the above is your serious view on Club stays, all I can say is that you have been very unlucky. We’ve even managed to extend a stay at YRP in July with no difficulty, so that’s another “myth” busted. And not due to weather being bad either, it was scorching when we were there.

We were looking both East and West this last week, nothing at all booked. Horrendous turn in weather means we are happier at home at moment. Nothing booked, nothing to cancel, no lost deposits, no let down CL owners. It is very easy, trust me. Give it a go, because you are coming over as though you have never tried it over here, but doing what everyone else thinks they need to do.
