Shell Fuel Card

Greetings one and all.

A 'heads up' for those of you who aren't already aware!

I'm a retired Insurance Claims adjuster, so fully inured to reading the small print, also fully aware that there's no such thing as a 'free lunch'; however, the fuel card which the club has negotiated for us cost nothing, so I thought it a good idea to add to the portfolio of touring options.

Before we toddled up to Norfolk last Friday in 'Barbara Ann', our VW California SE, I popped into Cobham services on the M25 to fill up for the journey and used the Shell card to pay.  At a price of £1:40 a litre, Shell can well afford to give an 8p per litre discount, even in the wilds of Norfolk did we see prices greater than £1:22 per litre!

We'll keep the fuel card, in case we're caught short on the motorway network, but at those prices, it will be 'break glass for emergency use' only.

If I fuel up with the caravan in tow it is invariably on the motorway. However as I doubt that it averages more than once a year (if that) I shall resist yet another card in my wallet.

I think many of us realised it doesn't represent a true saving as m/way service station prices are sky high so tend to fill up elsewhere. Some of us don't even have a m/way nearby anyway.

This brings back vague memories of the first special offer that vanished in a very strange way as soon as we became aware of it.

I think if I was needing fuel in an emergency, I would only put enough in to get me home or to site then find a local garage to fill up. another waste by the cmc.

It's nice that the option is there for those who might benifit. However, I don't ever remember buying fuel on a UK motorway. Even if I did, it would be unlikely to be more than the 37.5 litres a year required to break even for the cost of the card.

I don't remember the last time I stopped for fuel on a motorway.  My car can do at least 300+ miles when the tank is full and Im towing.  I am not likely to want to fill up during a journey, so I just fill up at a cheap fuel station before starting out.

I can't see me benefiting from a Shell Card.

That's probably the view of most. At best it could be said to reduce the price to somewhere near a normal independent garage and save coming off the motorway to find cheaper fuel. I plan ahead for where I can get refilled cheaply.

I've never put any fuel in on a motorway, but have a good chuckle at the prices they dare to charge.. laughing

If I use a motorway fuel station it is usually when travelling North on M6. On the rare occasion that I have done so it does seem that they are not greatly favoured. smile
