Red Pennant again

Is it that stupid? Imagine taking a week to get to the start of your Continental holiday. You have already paid for the crossing and perhaps some or all of your sites before leaving home. If you could set the Red Pennant start date for the day of the crossing none of that would be covered if you had a major incident in the week prior to the start of the Continental leg of your holiday? OK I know people will say that they don't book ahead etc, etc but many will so are Red Pennant meant to have two systems? As far as I am aware they are happy for the insurance to end the day you return to the UK which allows you to make use of any UK based insurance you may have in place.

I presume David that they would be happy for the insurance to be timed to suit your leaving ferry date?

Just to clarify the HOME to HOME thing. RP starts the day before you leave home, this is good because it does cover you should you breakdown on the way, don't say it won't happen because it does.

It happened to us, going to the Hull ferry. We left home on the Friday aiming to stop overnight at White Water site at Middlesbourgh. Just came through the Tyne Tunnel and the van almost stopped, we were reduced to 10 mph so had to be recovered, as it was a Friday afternoon there was no garage that would see us until Monday, so RP organised a recovery truck to take us to White Water where we were seen on the Monday morning  and fixed. The RP team re-booked our ferry at much greater cost for the next day.

The returning home part of the policy works like this, once you get off the ferry you can spend as much time as you want touring the UK (we do) but what you have to allow is 'the time it would take had you have gone straight home from the ferry' in our case it would be from Hull, so the same day that we get off the morning ferry, so the RP count stops at midnight that night.

There are not many who travel much further to ferries than those of us that live in Scotland, depending on which way we go its either the same day (Newcastle or Hull) or the next day if from the South coast ports, sometimes we do a 2 night stop over if we are getting a morning ferry, at other times we do a 1 night stop over and get an evening ferry.

The Red Pennant cover is very different to the Mayday cover or, indeed any other UK breakdown and recovery service.Red Pennant does not just fix the problem, it will supply a hire car if that is needed, it will sort out changing ferry crossings if that is required etc etc. Basically it will do all it can to enable you to continue on or home to/from your holiday or repatriate you and the car/caravan or motorhome back home if that is required.

A Uk cover will get the problem fixed if it can but that is all as that is all it is designed to do, it is not designed to keep you on your holiday or hire you a car to continue on with your holiday. The Red Pennant cover is a specialist cover to cover the car & caravan or motorhome  for holiday cover, it is almost like a holiday insurance for the car & caravan or motorhome, it is much more than a breakdown cover as anyone who has had call to use it will say.

Jacci, thanks for the explanation of the differance between the 2 policies, but if we were just to go away in the UK for 2 weeks it would be the Mayday cover that we would use. So why can we not elect to do the same once we have returned from abroad. In effect stop the RP 24hrs after we get off the ferry or the same day even. The way it was explained to me was that we would have to go home first, as this would satisfy the home to home cover of RP. Then we would have to leave home under the Mayday cover to holiday in the UK,  as I've already said we would be adding hundreds of miles unnecesearily onto the trip.

I think there has been a bit of confusion here, if, for example, you are travelling for a couple of days in the UK to get to the port before you make your way to the port then Red Pennant covers that time as if something were to happen that could put your foreign holiday at risk it would be Red Pennant that would be able to help you.

If, however, you are holidaying in the UK upon your return you can set the Red Pennant to finish on the date you would get home IF you were travelling home straight from the ferry. After that time you could call upon Mayday or your UK breakdown as they could fix things for you.

I hope this helps, we would definitely not expect you to go home first if you had plans for a UK holiday or to visit family etc. The important thing you need to remember to ensure your cover is valid is to finish the policy on the date you WOULD get back to your home address from the ferry port if you were going straight home.

Reading the Info ,it would be 12months from taking it out and 66days door to door max each trip,but of coures you need to be a cc member to take advantage

Not quite what you posted JV, the post has moved on a bit as well into the 'Long Stay' option which does not restrict you to just 2 journeys of up to 66 days in any 12 mth period . I've learnt that on CT unless you give clear  information there will always be someone who will come back and question it
