Club sites - advance booking system

Hi all, I'm sure this has been discussed before but here goes...

We normally use CLs as we like the peace & quiet and are happy to use our onboard shower and toilet etc., but on a certain weekend towards the end of June we want to visit Castleton in the Peak District.  There are no CLs in the village, leaving the Club site as the only option.

Looking online I see that no pitches are available for that weekend, or indeed for most weekends!

Now I have no problem if everyone who has booked actually turns up - good for them for planning ahead - but with the current system there is nothing to stop people making a large number of advance bookings, then cancelling right up to 72 hours before.  I can't wait that late - if the site is going to be full, we will want to book a B&B or hotel instead.

Would it not be a better idea for all pre-bookings to require a deposit of say £5 or £10 per night (more for the most popular sites, e.g. near London), refundable where there is a genuine reason for cancellation?  I believe a similar system may be operated by the Camping & Caravanning Club and this would surely deter people from  making advance bookings when they haven't really decided whether or not they will be going!

It would be helpful to know how many pitches are booked and then cancelled before the 72 hour deadline, just to give an idea of how much of a problem this really is.  Perhaps the Club could make some figures available.

Just to repeat, I have no problem with the site showing as full if all those who have pre-booked actually show up (give or take the odd one or two with genuine reasons for cancellation).

What do others think?

Nothing wrong with having big ideas!

Posted on 21/03/2018 07:56

not big ideas at all, Ask, it's just that the CC IT ideas (and its capability in delivering them) are very small....

i sympathise with your view, it's an oft discussed matter but the club will not move back to deposits, nor charge for dogs, nor for awnings, nor for ehu......it just has its way of doing things.....and that means (unfortunately) having to join the 'process' to get a popular site at a popular date.

why not give the site a ring, if a vacancy comes up, they will call and let you know.....perhaps this will happen and ypu could cancel any other alternatives you are planning...this worked for us at Baltic Wharf recently.

the club doesn't do 'flexible' in the way many tourers see it, it relies on a 'desire/perception' to book it's sites, giving the situation that TDA alluded to upthread of a group of 'honey pot sites'....

i wish you luck with your situation, you might get lucky....smile

wonder why club sites are so popular then?

I mean that's the bottom line isn't it? The club has a product that people want, and this must upset some who keep asking for these changes and big or small ideas, that keeps on selling year by year?

Anybody using CMC capsites have to assume that the figures on availability are accurate. The CMC have not published any figures to support the fact that pitches are being booked and people are not turning up.

Rather than assuming that the figures are wrong just because occasionally there is an unused pitch on any site, accept that there could be a good reason for that. It may be that there has been an illness or a mechanical breakdown or the pitch is being held for one of the Warden's friends to use. there are many reasons why not all pitches are  populated all the time.

Have some faith in the booking system, it's not perfect, but works well most of the time.

I am a customer of many, many successful businesses, CC included...

it doesn't stop me having a view on their (any business') products, processes, etc....

being successful (not being debated here) doesn't necessarily mean perfect (exactly what the OP is on about....

CC provides good quality site pitches, usually coupled with the basic facilities of toilets/showers, again usually of good quality in the mid/upper price bracket......but this is not the point of the thread....

the OP is questioning the 'nuances' of the booking/cancellation system.

indeed the OP is, but then perhaps you should stick to that?wink

I mean what do prices for awnings or dogs have to do with this thread?

you know very well I was illustrating that the club does things it's own way and were unlikely to change any of the those things, including moving back to deposits...(and dogs and awnings and.....)...as mentioned in the OP.

sometimes it seems that you try very hard 'not to understand' postings (especially from one or two people)...in order to make some sort of pedantic point yourself.....(now what was that post the other day about teacher and classroom...?)

I'm sure that isn't the case.....but perhaps it may be 'those people' who are the catalyst or just that you just simply 'don't understand'....

ill try and add a couple of footnotes next timewink

It would matter not a jot, me thinks, what booking system is in place, popular sites will always remain popular. Having deposits, or whatever, will not increase the number of pitches on a site! When all said and done the present system apparently does work across the C&MC network of sites and is possibly seen as fair in many folks eyes.
