We are delighted to announce that our ‘Caravanner of the Year’ competition was filmed by the BBC and will be on BBC2 on 20 and 27 April!

We hope it gets you in the mood for getting out there and enjoying the summer season on our wonderful sites network.

The enthusiasts were faced with a variety of challenges covering activities such as manoeuvring, navigation, hospitality and caravanning knowledge.  There was also the precision challenge of the Concours D’Elegance which demanded much polishing and primping of their vehicles!

The first programme will introduce the entrants and whittle them down to the three finalists.

Tune in and watch, and don’t forget to tell your friends and family about it too!

The grapevine says our Chairman is the head judge! Smile

I can confirm that this is indeed correct.  I don't know if motorcaravanners are part of the process, but the programme was filmed last September from what I hear.

The Caravanner of the Year will also be part of the One show on BBC 1 at 7pm on Wednesday, before the airing of the competition itself at 8pm on BBC 2.

Personally, I think whether you agree with the competition or not, it will help raise the profile of caravanning.  It sound like it might be good fun to watch.  Whether it is good publicity or not?...... well you know what they say.......  there's only one thing worse than bad publicity - that's no publicity at all!!

I'm looking forward to watching it.

surely, there will be an equal chance of the winner being a MHer?

after all, the starting line up will undoubtedly contain an equal number of caravanners to MHers.....wont it.....?

Even though it's probably ' tongue in cheek'  why doesn't your post suprise meSurprised

as a MHer (who represent a very significant and increasing proportion of the membership) i would expect any CC sponsored/promoted item to reflect this...

would you really expect a high profile Club event like this to be 'caravanners' only....remember the recent thread for a name change, which, while not really desirable, came about due to the rapidly changing demographic of the club.

im sure my concerns (tongue in cheek or not) will be alleviated.....

we wouldn't want a rare TV opportunity like this to send out the wrong signals, would we?Wink

still, I'm looking forward to the image the club portrays.

from those who've commented on the clips (not seen them myself) perhaps not having MHs associated with the antics might be a blessing....we'll see...

great fun, im sureHappy

As this is a competition, in one of the youtube clips a caravan gets damaged and will need a rear panel costing a few grand. Wonder if they are insured with the CC that covers competition use Tongue Out

Understand there is an item on the One Show ahead of broadcast on BBC2.

I would love to know who and how these 6 were considered to be the best in the club. Can we have an answer from the club please

It's a bad idea, amazed that the CC supported it. It will only serve to reinforce the non caravanners prejudices, IMHO.

Hi rkj,

The finalists were selected by our panel of judges based on their individual criteria. All entrants are members of The Caravan Club, and were judged on a series of fun challenges that tested the competitors’ skills in driving, towing, manoeuvring and pitching, as well as their superb knowledge about all things caravanning!

Make sure you tune in tomorrow to see how it goes Smile

Apparently there is a Utube video of  G Chamberlain making a complete cockup of a manouver and destroying bits of a caravan in the process. Sorry I don't have the link. I'm told  Its hillarious !!
