Hi everyone,

We areplanning a trip to the Biarritz area of South West France and are planning to stay at the campsite La Pavillion Royal, right on the coast at Bidart, just below Biarritz.

Has anyone had experience of staying at this site and got any tips of places to eat and visit locally?

Thanks ,

Art.

Hi, We stayed in the area a couple of times and used Camping Ruisseau, Itsas Mendi and La Rouletta but the latest was in 2016 so a while ago now

The beach at Pavillion Royal, Plage d'Ilbarritz, was very good with ample parking if not staying there.

St Jean de Luz is very nice but the prices are a shock when arriving from Spain as we did! First time there had a lovely meal at Aux pigeons Blanc near Place Louis but there is no shortage of choice.

One day out that we very much enjoyed was a trip on the train up to la Petite Rhune, and the views on a clear day are spectacular, as you stand with one foot in France and the other in Spain.

Albeit many years ago we stayed at Pavillon Royal, 2002 in fact. We thought it a nice site but prefered the pitches further back into the site rather than those on the cliff top overlooking the sea. They had a nice restaurant on site. We walked into Biarritz (those days we could!) As you walk into the town along the seafront there lots of lovely seafood restaurants, mainly sardines! It's good base for exploring the Basque Country inland should you wish.

We're staying at Larrouleta from 17th - 20th May, so just checked this out..... it's closed until June '23 undecided

Damn.

There is a path!!

There certainly is.
Follow the GR 10, then follow the yellow signs to the Rhune summit, can’t get lost, honest.
Last few yards are a bit rough and rocky, but no problem, lots of families with young kids enjoy the walk.
Recommended.

We had a journey up the Rhune railway several years ago and the heavy mist followed us up as well! As opposed to the wonderful view of the summit from the La Rouletta campsite in Urrugne we had no view at all whilst we were there and it was extremely cold. Best to check the weather reports…

We have used Larrouleta only once and the weather conditions were some of the worst we have driven in, driving rain and high winds reducing visibility, and roadworks with narrow lane contraflows on the A63.

It has rather coloured our opinion!
