The Old Wheelwrights Retreat is located in the quiet village of Firsby at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Much of this area is designated ‘An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and very close to the Coastal Resort of Skegness, known for the ‘Joly Fisherman’.
We are tucked away behind large wooden gates. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you venture down towards our CL site. It is a peaceful 2 acre, adult only site with 2 full and 3 part hardstanding pitches and 10amp Electric Hook Ups, overlooking the large picturesque pond. We have a covered waste area and Pot washing facilities. Single toilet and shower room exclusively for members only.
The “must see” Gunby Hall Estate and Gardens is just down the road This is a stunning National Trust Country House dating back to 1700.
Only 10 miles away is the seaside town of Skegness with all its fun sights and activities. Just south of the town centre of Skegness is Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve. This is well worth a visit, with information centre, coffee shop, outside protected decking and wonderful views across the marshes.
For those of you who are interested in leisure activities for Motor Racing, the famous Cadwell Park is under 20 miles away. Another popular choice in the area is golf and numerous popular courses can be found close by.
Locally you will find many public footpaths for your enjoyment. Also, we are fortunate to have the Firsby Curve nearby to the end of the site. The history of Firsby is an interesting one where the railway is connected, it used to have its own station. For enthusiasts it is just a short walk to the Firsby Curve and trains run from Boston to Skegness, if you’re lucky the driver will return a friendly wave. The nearest station you can hop on it is at Thorpe Culvert approximately 3 miles away.
Within a short drive, you will find the ancient port and market town of Wainfleet All Saints. The famous Batemans Brewery has been crafting beer here since 1847. You can book a tour (check availability) and get an opportunity to taste the raw materials and the beer at the varying stages of the brewing process.
There is a Heavy Horse Centre in the next village which is a charity run organisation and a worthwhile visit (for opening times and events check online).
Within the immediate area there are farm shops and roadside opportunities to purchase local produce. Our closest local amenities are located in the historic market town of Spilsby just 4 miles away. A delightful town for browsing and indulgence with a wide variety of shops, cafes and the attractive St James’ medieval parish church. Market day (with its live auction) is every Monday morning.
Eating out in the area caters for every pocket with lots of wonderful local pubs and restaurants within a short drive, we would be happy to recommend.
Whether you are planning relaxation or new activity, Andy and Sarah look forward to welcoming you and helping you enjoy your stay at The Old Wheelwrights Retreat.
