The historic city of Durham is situated in County Durham in the north-east of England, on the banks of the River Wear.
It is famed worldwide for its Norman cathedral, which was a place of pilgrimage for people in medieval times and can be explored with free entry today.
There is also a magnificent castle, which houses Durham University and is the oldest student accommodation in the world - it's therefore well worth taking a guided tour with an undergraduate, who may well live within its walls.
Other highlights include the Treasures of St Cuthbert, the Botanical Gardens and the Durham Light Infantry Museum.
There are plenty of shopping opportunities in Durham, with an indoor market for boutiques as well as all the big-name brands.
You'll also be extremely well catered for in terms of places to eat and drink during your stay, with everything from tapas to takeaway burgers on offer at one of the many pubs, cafes and restaurants.
