The Caravan and Motorhome Club scoops a Green Tourism Gold Award for its sustainability commitment

The Caravan and Motorhome Club has received a Green Tourism Gold Award, demonstrating its focus on encouraging sustainable initiatives across the business. Award certification company, Green Tourism has recognised the dedication of Caravan and Motorhome Club head office staff and those working on Club campsites to become more sustainable, in areas such as ‘People, Places and Planet’.

Three Club campsites teams at Rowan Park in Bognor Regis, Lady Margaret’s Park, in Chirk and Cayton Village in Scarborough also scooped Gold Awards for their work on recycling, water management and other green initiatives. While every other campsite across the Club’s network received a silver accreditation.

The Club met Green Tourism’s award criteria by achieving exceptional scores for the work it does around ‘People’, including communication, awareness, community, diversity and inclusion, and health and well-being. Examples include introducing a new sustainability hub on its website for Club members and an intranet for  staff and regular company seminars for men’s health, menopause awareness, hidden disabilities and mental health to name a few. It received strong scores for ‘Places’ based on its varied destination, experiences, travel, food and beverage and biodiversity schemes. Lastly, the Club had good scores for ‘Planet’ based on its reduction of water, carbon, chemicals, waste and energy.

Nick Lomas, Director General of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, commented: “Sustainability is a key focus of the Club and plays a crucial part of our strategic goals, not only for the work we do to encourage our members but for our business as a whole. Gold is a wonderful achievement and proves the dedication of our staff, it’s all our responsibility to become greener.

“However, this is just the beginning, the Club has much to achieve and focus on in 2024 to support its sustainable journey and we are delighted to work with Green Tourism, who are helping us to develop a framework to make sure we are making a conscious effort for our environment.”

Some of the other initiatives set up by the Club include:

  • offering staff a range of health and well-being services
  • encouraging members on getting out in the great outdoors by foot or by bike
  • community support with a wide range of charities being supported across the UK
  • a metering trial at a selected campsite to reduce electricity consumption
  • expanding the number of its sites using renewables
  • move to the use of more environmentally sustainable cleaning products
  • Introducing a trial on sensor taps and waterless urinals to reduce water consumption on campsites

Green Tourism are trusted eco experts striving to promote greener ways for businesses and their operations to be more sustainable and socially responsible. The Club has worked with the accreditation company since 2019, its awards certification programme recognises the commitment of tourism businesses which are actively working to become more sustainable and its awards are acknowledged worldwide as an indicator of good environmentally-friendly practice.

Green Tourism Founder, Andrea Nicholas, added: “I am delighted for all those involved at the Caravan and Motorhome Club on this impressive achievement. Not only has the Club built-in sustainability at both operational and strategic levels but so many Club campsites have obviously taken this to heart and worked so hard to achieve their Green Tourism awards. I am especially thrilled that three sites have earned Gold awards. We are proud to support the Club as it continues to take strides on its green journey."
