The Caravan and Motorhome Club highlights the thirst for discovery, adventure, and love of the great British seaside as top reasons to take a road trip

The thirst for discovery came out loud and clear in a recent survey from The Caravan and Motorhome Club. The ability to explore more places on one holiday is the top reason to take a road trip according to over a quarter of respondents.

The desire to have an adventure and get into the great outdoors are also major motivators, highlighted by 24 percent and 23 percent of respondents, respectively.  However, home is where the heart is – the UK is the top road trip destination for over 50 percent, proving there are plenty of adventures to be had on the doorstep.

The survey was recently conducted by the Club to help highlight key motivators and preferences of those opting for a road trip holiday.

The world is your oyster:

Whilst the UK emerged as the top road trip destination, over 16 percent identified the USA as their preferred country to visit, 13 percent said France, closely followed by Spain at just over 12 percent. The preference for the UK was particularly strong among younger respondents, with 60 percent of those aged between 18-24 selecting it as their top choice – signifying the ease of travelling closer to home and the preference for a less costly option for the more budget conscious.

This preference gradually decreased with age with only 39 percent of those aged 55+ choosing the UK as their top destination. With over 2,700 campsites in the UK and Europe and an extensive range of worldwide tours, the Caravan and Motorhome Club has a range of options to suit all wanderlusts!

The holiday starts straight away:

The journey itself is a significant part of the holiday when taking a road trip. Over 40 percent of respondents said that taking the slower, scenic route was more important than reaching their destination quickly. Tourers love the outdoors, with beaches being the most popular must-see stops during the journey. In fact, 32 percent of respondents listed the seaside as their top attraction to experience along the way. National parks came in second, with 29 percent, and 27 percent said they enjoyed stopping near a lake.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club provides exclusive benefits and opportunities for members to engage in surfing and paddle sports with their collaboration with Surfing England and Paddle UK to promote outdoor activities and enhance member experiences.

A quick and easy trip away:

Road trippers love the fact they can easily get away for numerous holidays each year with the most common duration for a road trip being three to four days, closely followed by a week. Enthusiasts dream of spending more time on the open road with ten percent of respondents saying they would take one month away if money and time were no object.

For those that do not have their own motorhome and fancy a few days seeing what it is all about, Experience Freedom by the Caravan and Motorhome Club offers motorhome hire with the choice of a variety of vehicles and hire branches across the country via hire partners.

A takeaway treat:

When asked what their favourite takeaway treat was whilst touring, over 31 percent cited the traditional UK favourite of fish and chips. Some 27 percent opted for pizza whilst 19 percent said Chinese food was their most wanted takeaway treat. However over 20 percent said that cooking for themselves and having a BBQ was their favourite dining option whilst away.

Exploring the great outdoors:

Road trips are the best ways to explore, with over 46 percent of respondents saying that sightseeing was their most enjoyable activity whilst on a road trip.  Members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club can take advantage of the Great Savings Guide which features a range of member offers with exclusive discounts on attractions, including reduced entry fees and deals on local activities.

Part of being on a road trip is enjoying the great outdoors and tourers are an active bunch, hiking and rambling were the second most enjoyed activities chosen by 24 percent of respondents.

Family favourites:

When on holiday, 44 percent of respondents said they prefer to travel with a partner, wife, or husband. Other family members are the second most popular companions, chosen by over 20 percent of respondents.

Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing and Membership Services said: “It was interesting to see the results of this survey. We know that our members love to get in the great outdoors and have a real thirst for adventure and this is replicated by the general public. Our 2,700 sites in the UK and Europe, and our range of worldwide tours, offer a vast array of options - from sites on the doorstep to road trips across New Zealand. For those that want a few days eating tasty food and discovering new destinations, to those who want an active time in the great outdoors – the road trip really does have something to offer for everyone.”
