Caravan and Motorhome ‘Club Stars’ awards
Recognising outstanding achievement at the Club
Results of the second annual Caravan and Motorhome Club staff awards have been announced. The awards, ‘Club Stars’, recognise outstanding achievement from employees.
Champions of the great outdoors – from glamping to touring – the Caravan and Motorhome Club represents the interests of over 1.1million caravan, motorhome, campervan and trailer tent owners across the UK. At the heart of the organisation is the team of over 1,300 Club staff.
Staff were asked to nominate colleagues for the Club Stars awards and 177 nominations were received across head office and the Club’s campsite network, 15% more than in 2022.
Nick Lomas, Director General of the Caravan and Motorhome Club said, “Over the past two years the Club has launched a number of initiatives to support staff both in the workplace, personal development and their personal wellbeing. We feel it’s vitally important to recognise employees for their outstanding efforts which make the Club the success it is. The Club Stars Awards give us the opportunity to recognise employees who have gone above and beyond in their contribution to the Club and its members.”
Club Stars award categories:
- Individual award - someone who has demonstrated a WOW moment and made a significant impact to the Club, members or their colleagues
- Team award (small teams with a maximum of 8-10 people)
- Site award
- Everyday hero award (someone who is great at their job everyday!)
- DG award - the recipient was chosen by Nick Lomas (Director General) for their outstanding achievement and contribution to the Club
Kerry Upton, Head of Human Resources at the Club said, “Staff were asked to nominate colleagues, or themselves, for our Club Stars awards. From the 177 nominations, a shortlist of the top 15 from each category was compiled and then our panel of recognition champions, made up of employees from across the Club - who brought a broad perspective of views and experience - then selected the top three in each category. The DG Award was chosen by Nick Lomas. All those that reached the top five shortlist were invited to a celebration lunch, along with those staff who nominated them. It was wonderful to bring everyone together to celebrate the successes of colleagues.”
The criteria used to score the entries were aligned to the Club’s core values.
- Inclusive: How they demonstrated they are a role model to others
- Simplify: How they made a difference
- Pioneer: How have they influenced the key area of focus
- Inspire: The positive impact they had on colleagues, members and the Club
The Winners
Individual award:
WINNER - Adam Johnson (Publishing)
2nd place - Sam Jackson (Overseas Travel)
3rd place - Carl Dixon (Sites Network)
Adam Johnson nomination comments:
Adam Johnson (AJ) has been with the Club for 13 years and part of the Commercial advertising sales team since 2016. He has consistently performed well but his sales success since October 2022 has been truly outstanding together with exceeding his personal budget targets each month. AJ is a well known and popular figure in the Club.
Team award:
WINNER - Gordon and Christine Milne (Sites Network)
2nd place - The EG Charities Team
3rd place - Southport Team (Sites Network)
Gordon and Christine Milne nomination comments:
Gordon and Christine showed complete selflessness in sacrificing their own time to respond immediately to a colleague and campsite in need. In late September, during their time off, they were called, at very short notice, to see if they could travel to Kinlochewe Club Campsite as, very sadly, the person who was managing the campsite had passed away suddenly. Gordon and Christine, without hesitation, immediately packed up their belongings and travelled to the Kinlochewe to support the wife of the gentleman who had passed away and look after the Club campsite.
Gordon and Christine did everything they could to support all those involved during that sad time, provided comfort and support, helped the bereaved wife to contact family members and ensure she was accompanied during her 250 mile journey home; all the while making sure the campsite continued to operate. They are a shining example of teamwork and epitomise all the qualities the Club looks for in staff.
Site award:
WINNER - Battle Normanhurst Court Club Campsite
2nd place - Lady Margaret's Park Club Campsite
3rd place - Cayton Village Club Campsite
Battle Normanhurst Court Club Campsite nomination comments:
The Club offers its staff the use of a staff caravan and this would not be possible to do without the dedicated support of the team on the Club campsite where the caravan is located. Keeping an eye on the staff caravans is an extra task the site team carry out which is a big task, particularly when the campsites are very busy with members and guests. Having the staff caravans is a great opportunity for Club staff to experience this pastime, as well as offering a good value, fun holiday experience which would not be possible without the help and support of the site team.
Everyday hero award:
WINNER - Julia Ward (Finance)
2nd place - Lia Clark (HR)
3rd place - Janet Phillips (HR)
Julia Ward nomination comments:
Julia is an unsung hero of the Club and particularly of the Finance Department. Julia has been working at the Club for over 30 years and her knowledge and experience is second-to-none. She will take a new starter under her wing and has an infinite amount of patience when training and imparting her knowledge. Nothing is too much trouble for her. If anyone around the business has a query with invoicing, she will drop whatever she is doing to help them out, regardless of how busy she is herself. Julia is always the first to ask if there is anything she can do to help colleagues and is generous with her time and knowledge and has no hesitation in putting in extra hours if needed.
DG award
Chosen by Nick Lomas, Director General of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, this award is given to an individual or team who have ‘wowed’ the DG with their passion and contribution over the last year. This was based on interactions or feedback the DG has received directly that has impressed him and aligns with our values.
WINNER - Paul Wade - Estates
Paul joined the Club in September 2022 as Senior Property Manager. One of his first tasks was to negotiate with a Local Authority regarding a lease, which was ending and the land being used for other development.
Paul, utilising all of his knowledge and experience as a Chartered Surveyor, thoroughly reviewed the lease and identified a way forward in what was a complex situation, to negotiate a commercially satisfactory outcome for the Club and its members.
