Peace and Quiet Again

Crossways Club Campsite
This is our 2nd stay at this wonderful site. It is the best Club Site we have visited. Such a lovely setting with all pitches in amongst trees with deer calmly wandering through with no fear. The wardens, led by Glen and Sue, were very friendly and helpful. We had no issues with the composting toilets and aren't as daunting as you would think. The railway station is minutes up the road to visit Weymouth, Dorchester and Bournemouth. Next to the station is a lovely pub serving lovely food. We will definitely be returning as it has become our favourite site.

Wonderful gem of a site

Crossways Club Campsite
I almost changed our booking concerned about the composting toilets and wooded nature of the site but I’m so glad I didn’t. Such a beautiful place. The deer are adorable and the site is natural and yet spotless. The wardens are so friendly and welcoming and suggested the best place to pitch seeing as I wanted a fairly open sunny pitch. Yes the train sounds its horn as it approaches the level crossing adjacent to the site but the deer aren’t phased and neither were we. The toilets were always clean and when everyone follows the instructions to keep the lids down there is no smell. Yes they are oldish but I was impressed by how clean they were. With the need to be environmentally aware they worked. I agree they are not especially child friendly and if I had young children I would ensure they were supervised. The only other issue is the lack of WiFi throughout the site. I had to go to the public information hut for an online meeting and there was no phone signal either other than in the WiFi hotspot. This is wonderful for getting away from the mobiles but there were times when a walk through the pitch dark forested site wasn’t comfortable. I would however return in a moment. It’s a beautiful place and I’m glad to have been there.

Beautiful site but needs some investment

Crossways Club Campsite
Stayed 2 nights here, peak season in August, our fourth stay on this site in about 3 years. Busy yet it didn't really feel like it. The location is absolutely delightful - pitches are mostly located in woodland. An element of privacy can be enjoyed if you pick a pitch with some care and good luck. It's a big site, served by a meandering road network but it's easy to follow. Watch out for the deer which seem totally unfazed by humans. The wardens were very welcoming and the site is generally well cared for, albeit it clearly does need some investment and modernisation of facilities. Shower blocks (2) are not co-located with the toilet blocks, so you have to walk from one to the other. Irksome but not a major drawback. The composting loos are old and are apparently much in need of replacement. Some may find the 'long drop' a little off-putting... and are not small-child friendly. Showers work well, plenty of water pressure and hot water. Excellent rail link to Dorchester and Poole/Bournemouth just a 5 minute walk away and some bus services run from a stop close to the site. Well stocked Co-Op 10 minutes walk away and a good foodie pub is just 5 minutes walk away, next to Moreton station. Worth a 10 minute drive to The Walled Garden at Moreton too which has an excellent cafe. Easy road access to local landmarks and visitor attractions (Bovington Tank Museum, Monkey World, Thomas Hardy's cottage, Lawrence of Arabia's cottage etc. And then there's Weymouth...nice beach, shame about the town). There is frequent train-horn noise and the annoying 'beep beep' sounds from from excavators operating from the (very) adjacent sand quarry at the rear of the site. That said, you get used to these after a while! Overall, a lovely site but it does need to have money spent on it. There may well be valid reasons why the Club may be reluctant to invest in this site, not least of which is the possibility of large-scale housing development in the immediate area. That's a pity as this is a truly beautiful site and we shall be returning at some time in the future. Hopefully.

Very welcoming

Crossways Club Campsite
We have stayed here twice recently, Glenn and Sue are very welcoming, friendly, great to chat with and relaxed about how you set up your pitch (some wardens can be a bit over the top but these folks are not and it is very much appreciated - at the end of the day it is our holiday!). The railway line is not as obtrusive as you may think. We only live 6 miles from the site but once you are on site you could be anywhere and it a great spot for weekends away. Some very nice secluded pitches and also some more open spaces - it just depends on how sociable you want to be. Do not overlook this compact wooded site in favour of bigger more commercial places!

Want to be off grid

Crossways Club Campsite
Turned up at site, friendly wardens, easy check in, not the easiest site to find way around on map, found pitch in a very quiet part. Water/ waste easily execesable, hook up ok. Not so good, no TV signal, need long cable to connect(inxs 10m) no 4G connection at all, so forget smart TV, although WiFi by reception. Showers clean and really good, toilets are dry compositing, which is an eye opener. Doggy walks ok around site, get up early and loads of deer about, nice playing field for dogs 1/2 mile away, lovely walk about in poundbury. Shops easy access, good access to Weymouth/Poole/Bournemouth. Would be nice to be aware of no 4g or TV and dry toilets. If not upgraded not sure if we'd go back.
