Motorhome v Caravan

This story happened on: 10/11/2017

My coachman caravan has recently been with my approved workshop getting some damp work repaired luckily just within the warranty period by one week.

Having no caravan I took advantage of an offer of a motorhome to hire for one week to explore highlands of Scotland . collected the motorhome at Kilmarnock and stayed the first night at Strathclyde club site only a 40 minute drive away to get used to the motorhome. Next stop was Grantown on Spey about 3 1/2  hours drive. surprised how good a drive on A9 .

Site was excellent stayed for two nights exploring the local area.Took mountain railway at Avimore lovely scenery. From Grantown on Spey went to Glencoe good site with pitch right by the Loch.

Visited Oban spent two nights here then went back to Strathclyde before returning the motorhome the next day.

It was a six berth motorhome ok for two people but it would have been cramped if we had grandchildren with us. A big disadvantage if you wanted to go anywhere we had to take the motorhome and finding suitable and safe parking areas wasn’t easy. Ok if you tow a small car or have a motor bike. public transport in the highlands area is there but long gaps between service times.

It was a good opportunity to test the option of a motorhome against a caravan and for me I will stick to a caravan.

Anyone contemplating switching I suggest you rent a motorhome which I did first week of November was lucky with weather and a small number of sites still open all year. There are also a few cl sites open but I didn’t get any response to a couple of them when I made enquiries so stuck to club sites.

If buying new you could get a decent tow car and caravan for the price of a motorhome. For those over 70 remember you are restricted by weight of motorhome to 3500 kg unless you take the medical and keep your c1 licence entitlement.

Best part of my trip was the area around Glencoe beautiful !

I would have no hesitation taking the caravan as far as Inverness. Unfortunately because of time restriction I didn’t get up to John o Groats. Save it for another trip.
