Adding a second awning rail

On returning Home from a holiday in Cornwall I suffered major damage to the centre window of my 1995 Fleetwood garland 165/4 on checking out the cost of replacement approx £300 I decided to replace with one from autotech leisure services  caravan dismantlers, after fitting   I thought it would be wise to invest in a towing cover, to my surprise I realised then that the caravan  had only one awning rail and decided I would replace a section of the existing rail during my investigations into this I realised that a c section awning rail would fit snugly over the existing one and so decided to continue with a modification.

Materials

A section of awning c section rail at a cost of &12.00 from Camperlands in Northenden

8 metres of awning rail moulding P.V.C insert £8.91 from Caravanstuff4u

A box of 200 stainless steel screws 3.5mm x 25 mm £3.85 from Toolstation

 

The Method

I formed the shape in the c profile awning rail bending by hand, following the outline shape of the existing rail, I cut the rail into 2 pieces at the first bend as access for fitting the cover. ref Pic1

 

                         

 

 

 

 

 

 

I removed the awning rail Moulding to locate the position of the original fixing screws to identify a new fixing location. ref Pic2

I marked out and drilled the holes in the new rail to go between each of the original screws and drilled 4 mm dia holes counter sinking for the screw heads. I refitted the new awning rail moulding and the new awning rail with the stainless steel screws.
