Bad end to a late break

This story happened on: 20/11/2013

We were on our way home from a very enjoyable week in the new forrest. On our journey home we stopped at Fleet services on M3 .Following the parking instructions we parked our motorhome in the lorry park. We had been there only a matter of minutes when there was a loud bang & the motorhome lurched side ways. An HGV trying to reverse into next bay had hit us totally demolishing offside mirror and door glass. Nearly 4hours later with motorhome on a recovery truck we were once again on our way home. Our motorhome is only 6months old and has less than 2000miles on the clock .Why do we have to park in amongst HGVs ? Not a happy chapy !!

Definitely a sad story ... but if there is a bright side at least it was only the mirror/glass ...could have side swipped your whole outfit and possibly you!

You're right ... sometimes its quite scarey in those bays.

Unfortunately these things happen in lorry parks, same thing happens in coach parks too, the driver is tired and is reversing on their blind side and bang. No consolation for you but at least no one was hurt, it's repairable and although it seems to have ruined your holiday, you got home safely in the end and the damage can and will be fixed. Just look upon it as another adventure to add to your hols.

Why you have to park there I have no idea and to be honest I've never been keen on stopping at fleet, even getting fuel is awkward, horrible place in my opinion, not that motorway services are nice where ever you go.

I parked in the coach park of Durham services on the A1 at the beginning of the month as the hgv parking area was full....got a rollicking from a staff member and threatened with a fine ! I won't be going back !

The coach bay/ park was empty.

We never use motorway services, too expensive, too congested & not the safest, and can often waste more time. When I was working, as a lorry driver, i never used motorway services I would always pull off. My bible was a book called "near the motorway", brilliant book gives everything within 5 mins of every junction. Fuel & eating is always cheaper off the motorway, and wherever you stop off the motorway is far more relaxing than a Service area.

sorry about the damage, but 'billnMarie' have the right idea - my husband was an HGV driver for nearly 30 years, and he never used the services - far too congested, too expensive, too noisy, so a sad lesson. Must get a copy of that book?
