breakdown on the way to berwick club site

I would like to share this story with fellow caravanners, just in case anyone has the misfortune to breakdown whilst on the way to a club site. We set off from Beverley, (East York's,) We were booked in at the Berwick club site. We had only travelled about 20 miles when I felt that the car was feeling sluggish. I pulled over & discovered one of the brake calipers had been sticking. I phoned Mayday rescue & was told that someone would be with me, within the hour, and that if the caliper could not be freed then We would be taken up to our holiday & brought back if we wanted. Green flag duly arrived & i was told that the problem could not be fixed at the roadside. The fitter then spoke to his boss, and within minutes I had a call from Mayday telling me that they would take the car to the garage from which the recovery had come from, the car would be fixed and then I would be billed for the repair. This is not what I had been told, and clearly not the correct procedure for the type of cover that we had. I made it quite clear with the opperater that if the car could not be fixed, then I expected Mayday to stand by their policy & take us to our destination. After a short debate. Mayday told me they would get back to me. I suspect that it was the recovery garage that was trying to call the shots and I suppose thought that they would have greater financial benefit from a repair than losing a vehicle for a day on the long trip to Berwick, but we have this service for peace of mind. I didn't fancy sitting in a garage near York, for the best part of a day, when I could be on site, and sort my car out in my own time Mayday called me back & told me that we would be taken up-to our holiday, & brought back if necessary. I said just get me there & I would sort the car out in Berwick. We were taken upto the site after some debate between the fitter and his boss. the fitter in question was a good chap, who was quite happy to take us up there, and we had a good holiday. a new caliper was put on at a garage near berwick, and all ended well. There is a moral to this story. Mayday is a great benefit to have for peace of mind, but don't let recovery garages dictate the solution to a breakdown, and insist that the recovery stick to the service for which you are entitled.
