#XploreMore 2014 - Task 41 - Build a boat and see if it floats

This story happened on: 02/08/2014

Kielder seemed the perfect place for our boat building challenge, number …. on our list of our 100 activities, because of the huge reservoir in the middle of it’s well known forest (which can hold ……. billion gallons of water!) Of course, we didn’t need a body of water that big but since we were visiting a site just near the bank of the reservoir, we thought it seemed perfect to do it here.

Now, on the list of activities it didn’t specifically state how big the boat actually needed to be so we decided to keep it simple - Ella made a boat about 25cm long and mine about 10cm. It also didn’t state what it needed to be made of so we basically found any rubbish that we thought would float and cellotaped it together (well not exactly that way). Ella found a 2 litre milk bottle and a plastic monopoly cover and cellotaped them together (and taped the lid on too). I found 2 Actimel pots, used some elastic bands to attach some cut plastic bag pieces onto the top where you drink from and picked a few smallish twigs up from the forest area behind the caravan. Then I used more bands to attach to the top of the pots, so it was like a mini raft.

Later that afternoon, we headed down to the bank and started to launch out boats. Unfortunately, the wind started to pick up and our boats started to drift. Still, they floated so that was another challenge completed successfully!
