Getting into the Christmas spirit at Ferry Meadows

This story happened on: 21/12/2015

During the winter months it's noticeable that fewer Caravan Club sites are open so we end up staying longer at the ones that are open. This week we stayed at Ferry Meadows, where we have been a few times before. Its location appealed to us for many reasons; it is literally on the doorstop of the Country Park and also close to the city of Peterborough meaning that we could get outside and explore the park as well as get the dreaded Christmas shopping done.

The Ferry Meadows Caravan Club site isn't far from Peterborough - you could actually cycle to it. Alternatively there is always public transport. There is a convenient bus stop in the nearby village of Orton Wistow which we walked to a couple of days and caught the bus into Peterborough. Although quite expensive for a family ticket it makes life much easier than having to find, pay and worry about parking, particularly with a larger vehicle like the motorhome.

On the other days we stayed near the site and made the most of what the country park had to offer. The visitor centre and discovery den offer a range of events throughout the year, particularly for children. During our stay there was a Christmas fayre with stalls selling Christmas related crafts, a miniature farm, food stalls and the opportunity to make your own card-based Christmas trees in the Discovery Den. During the week the park also offered a Christmas trail for children, encouraging them to explore the park. If you're in the area check the what's on because there is always something! Then at the weekend, there is the weekly Park Run. Whilst it appeals to die hard runners it also welcomes anyone and everyone who wishes to run the 5 km course around the lakes. The atmosphere is exciting ad supportive; you don't need to be a seasoned jogger and it's great fun for the family to join in.

The Country Park is less than a hundred metres away from the Caravan Club site. It is a popular venue with regular visitors throughout the week. We ventured into the park on our bikes, stopping off at hides to watch the variety of birds that visit the feeders and wade round the edges of the lakes. We continued along the river (even managing to spot a kingfisher) and out of the park to explore further afield before returning.

Our stay at Ferry Meadows was busy. We were made to feel very welcome by some of the friendliest wardens. The girls were shown a party trick that they will no doubt be peforming to family on Christmas day!
