Festival Caravanning

This story happened on: 16/08/2015

Well this was a new experience for Ellie (our caravan) and us! During the last year, we've stayed in numerous Caravan Club sites plus the occasional affiliated or certficated site, all of which have offered varying degrees of size, cleanliness, friendliness and opportunities for places to go and see. It was now our turn at taking our home with us to a festival, the largest family festival in the UK: Camp Bestival.

We arrived early, the day before the festival opened and were escorted to the Artist's camp, where we were basically left to our own devices, pitching up in an area of the field that was demarcated by mowed lines in the lawn. The field soon filled up and by the end of the day an array of different shapes, sizes and ages of caravans and motorhomes were parked higgledy-piggledy around the field. We soon made acquaintances with our neighbours as the kids all chatted and played in any space that they could find.
There was no electricity, toilet facilities consisted of portaloos about 100 metres away and there was a tap for filling up bottles and aquarolls. It was all part of the experience and we loved it! The caravan was a welcome base from which we could set off in the morning and return to at night, popping back for fleeting stops to refuel if needed but mainly filling our days with listening to workshops, entertaining comedy acts, silly science shows, circus skills and of course music.
We have been to a few different festivals (Adventure and Literary) this year but haven't taken along our caravan with us, parking up in nearby sites. Camp Bestival is a fabulous festival focussed on and around families and children. We thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to return next year.
As we joined the queue of cars, snaking out of the Lulworth Castle grounds on the Monday morning, we reflected on our long weekend of festivities. We were all tired but content, heads full of the songs of the bands that we'd listened to and looking forward to the Caravan Club toilet facilities at the next site!
