Family In:site into Castleton CC site

This story happened on: 12/03/2015

The Castleton Caravan Club Site is another busy site in the Peak District, particularly popular with walkers and people who love the outdoors. The location to this site is key, with beautiful countryside surrounding it. A short walk down the road leads to Castleton where there is a selection of pubs, local shops and a visitor centre.

Some places to visit nearby to visit:

Walks
There are a range of short and long walks from the campsite including Mam Tor and the Castleton Ridge to Lose Hill. It was on the ridge that the girls did a pop-up cafe as part of an enterprising project to raise money for Edale Mountain Rescue (https://www.facebook.com/meekroadventures/timeline#). Other superb walks include the Edale area, Kinder Scout, Hathersage, Stanage Edge and walks around or near the reservoirs Ladybower and Derwent.

Caverns
The area is renowned for its caverns and there are plenty to choose from. Within walking distance is the Peak Cavern and the Devil's Arse in Castleton. You can get joint tickets for this along with the Speedwell cavern which offers boat trips as part of the tour. Further up into the hills are the Treak and Blue John caverns, both offering tours of the caves and tunnels where Blue John was mined.

Reservoirs
Derwent, LadyBower and Howden reservoirs are a short drive away and well worth a visit. The visitor centre hosts a small cafe and plenty of information about walks, and the wildlife. The views are amazing and a whole day could easily be spent here, walking and cycling the area.
The Ladybower reservoir is synonymous with the bouncing bomb since it was here that Barnes Wallace tested his invention and the filming of "The Dambusters" took place. A small but excellent museum dedicated to the reservoir and its role in the war is situated in the Western tower of Derwent Dam. It is run by a volunteer and is only open on Sundays.
