Ever used Camping Cheques?

This story happened on: 13/09/2016

This summer, during our travels over to Europe we used camping cheques for a few of the campsites that we were staying on. It was a new experience for us and added a different dimension to the booking process.

For those that haven't used them before, they are just 'what they say on the label' - cheques that pay for campsites. But why would you want them? Well, they allow you to stay at a campsite for a fixed fee of £14.95 during the low season. There are over 600 campsites throughout Europe and Morocco that accept the camping cheques and since some of the countries in northern Europe began their low season in mid August, we able to start using them during our trip.

The camping cheques are available as paper cheques that can be delivered to your door ready to take away with you but an easier alternative is a Camping Cheque card (silver or gold - each with different benefits). We have a silver card that stores units (one unit = one cheque). These can be topped up by phone or on the internet on an easy-to-navigate website. You can also check your balance online as well. The card is used like a debit card; when it comes to paying for your stay the card is simply swiped and units removed.

A cheque or unit costs £14.95 and covers one night stay for two adults (children are extra) on a standard pitch with electricity and showers. We were able to use our Camping Cheque card in Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the month of August and hopefully look forward to using it again in other parts of Europe next year.

Perhaps worth pointing out that unless the cheques are purchased as part of a ferry package a small administration fee is applied and if you want to use a credit card, far the safest way in buying online, a further fee is payable. Whilst these fees are quite small they are none the less fees!
